PD and Speech Therapy

I lost the post asking about PD and speech problems. .. but I am a retired Speech Pathologist, so after my Hwp was diagnosed, I started researching Speech programs for PD. I was most impressed with the Speak Out program, and became certified to be able to use best technique to work with my husband.

Check out their website to find a certified Speak Out program in your area.

When I read a paragraph backwards seems to help pronunciation and cognition.

Because you are focusing on each word at a time.

My husband took the Scottish equivalent of this course provided by the NHS but only after a lot of persuasion and pushing his consultant to recommend it..However it was worth it,and the 10 week course really has improved his speech, both in loudness and clarity. But like cleaning your teeth, you have to do set exercises every day to keep the progress going on ethe course is finished.

Had this website bookmarked but had forgotten about it! Hubby had gone to LSVT (Big and Loud), gave him a breather tool. I have to be his reminder and sometimes strongly urge him to do his exercises.

He sometimes talks but no words come out. Most frustrating for both of us. I'll send a link to his email to remind him to practice (instead of almost "nagging" him).

SpeechVive is back in business - kind of on hold as they worked on sorting out the medical codes with Medicare/Medicaid. Seems this brought the price up another grand. We did the test they provided on an app to see if hubby would talk with some loudness and he does. Still, so there is hope. We've filled out the application and had his neurologist fill out the medical portion. Trying to see if Medicare care through Humana (our Medicare Advantage provider) will be covered. Original Medicare will pay 80% of the product but not sure how much if anything will be covered with Medicare Advantage. Even SpeechVive doesn't know. Right now playing the waiting game. I posted info about SpeechVive over a year ago.

RetiredSLP, do you know anyone who has used SpeechVive or hear anything about this product through the grapevine?

I haven’t heard of the Speech vive tool.

Part of what I like about the Soeak Out program is their focus on Speech, but also Language, keeping your brain sharp and thinking. Their follow-up includes weekly meetings in a small group with others, the camaraderie, developing friendships and support.

Yes, I checked out the website and looks very good. Bookmarked the site and made myself a note so I don't forget to tell hubby. 🙂

So appreciate the website info - it looks great. We live in a small mountain town, so to have a way to help my HWP with his speech is a real gift. Thank you!
