Sebum is an oily secretion from sebaceous glands under the skin which are connected to the endocrine system. The scientists have found that sebum can be used as a diagnostic biofluid, which is rich in hydrophobic endogenous metabolites.
Altered sebum production is a well-recognised feature of Parkinson’s. The sampling procedure they have developed is simple and non-invasive; sebum is collected in clinics from the upper back of patients and posted in the regular mail to the lab.
Describing the new technique Dr Depanjan Sarkar said: “The sebum is transferred to filter paper from sampling swab, and we then cut this to a triangle, add a drop of solvent, apply a voltage and this transfers compounds from the sebum into the mass spectrometer. When we do this, we find more than 4000 unique compounds of which 500 are different between people with PD compared to the control participants.”
The Manchester team now see this as a major step forward towards a clinical method for confirmatory diagnosis of Parkinson’s, for which to date there is no diagnostic test based on biomarkers.

YES, IT DOES. This test was developed through the help of a woman who could smell PD. I saw a video on it through HU. They also have came up with a syn-1 test as well, this test takes skin patches. I am sending the study test publications on both to our dermatologist to see if they can help with getting these tests. Also, we have had a recent quandary, and I would really like to know if anyone else has experienced the same. We have had a hot tub for 30 plus years. Different tubs (3), and never had an issue with cleaning etc. Recently, the last 6-8 months the tub is collecting an oil residue at the water line. It is very difficult to clean off. We are using the same products in the tub, and the filters are new, clean and working well. The only thing that has changed is the stake of supplements my husband is taking, lots of detox, cleanse and pro biotics. I suspect, these oils are coming off his body. Anyone else with a hot tub water line problem?
I have an oily hubby problem but he doesn’t often use the hot tub. Does he take pantethine? I think that reduces the grease, otherwise all I can suggest is a soapy shower before getting in.
“Pantethine – A stonger, more effective form of Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)Although most people use Pantothenic Acid instead of Pantethine, Pantethine can also be used to treat acne. In fact, it is the form of Vitamin B5 that we actually prefer to treat acne and oily skin.”
Ha, funny you should ask. Recently I have just added a multi- vitamin in an attempt to decrease his daily supplement/add different items, and switched to a multi vitamin that does have 10 mg Pantothenic Acid. I wouldn't thing that would be enough to make a difference, but I can dropped the MV for a while and see is hot tub problem is solved. He doesn't have noticeable oil on skin, and showers daily, but a very hard worker. Thanks for the Tip!
