Experience with giving oneself a shot? Exenatide shot leaking - medicine being lost - please help

I take 2 mg of Exenatide a week for my PD. (There are many other threads explaining why)

About 1/2 the time the shot leaks some liquid on to my skin surrounding the shot site. I’m concerned that I’m therefore not getting a complete dose.

Please, if you have experience with this, help me. My husband is giving me the shot. I should probably take on doing this myself but I’m grateful he is trying. I have a hard time with anxiety and injecting a needle increases my anxiety.

Thank you

Are they pre-filled syringes? Since I don’t think there are too many people here taking it, maybe a better place to ask that question would be a diabetic forum? Just a thought.

As a non diabetic, accessing a diabetic forum is a challenge.

Doesn’t address the leaking problem besides saying read the manual. It’s daily, mine is weekly. I’m grateful for your trying to help me

pinch up the loose skin where your shot site is, while pinching an inch, place the needle into the pinched up skin......slowly push the plunger upon completion before removing the needle unpinch then slowly remove needle...hang tough. cheers

Thank you! I will try and do it slower. It leaks out during the process of depressing the plunger leading me to think the needle is not in all the way but it is. Any thoughts on it leaking liquid as the plunger is being pressed?

the only thing i can think of is depress it slowly and if you can rub around the needle while its in...gently to dispurse the med...and stay hydrated so your skin isnt tight....hang tough...cheers

It is unavailable from HU. Click on it to watch on YopuTube. Good luck.

(I bet your pharmacist has had this question before).

in reply to Bolt_Upright

I thought that too. Alas we have a pharmacist who asked to read the manual to figure out how to do it. 🙃. I’ve joined a diabetes forum despite not being diabetic to ask.

Hi. I had the same problem when I started taking exenatide. What I do now is wait about 20 seconds after giving the shot and seeing the injector move all the way before removing the needle to give it time to spread inside the skin. After that I place a band-aid over the spot to catch any blood drop that might’ve leaked. Just give it time before pulling the needle out. Hope it helps.

in reply to Alekyz

Thank you! I will try this.

I'd suggest when you pull the needle out immediately put your finger, or a cotton ball, on the hole to cork it. The fluid seeps into tissue and won't be there to leak after a minute or so. I've injected myself for 40 years; Testosterone, ozone, autohemotherapy, dextrose, etc.

What if I depress the plunger more slowly? The leakage is as it’s going in and sometimes more after pulling the needle out. Danke! (My son is learning German like his German speaking Daddy.).

She is not asking how to dry the leakage but concerned if she gets the right amount of it.

Did you call the number in your manual? Like, a helpline? We did this when we had trouble with my dad's insulin injector, and the lady on the other end of the line was very helpful.

in reply to amykp

Yes, not the least bit helpful as they just repeated what is in the brochure in the box

Hi there, I take exenatide 2mg weekly injection (BCise) prolonged release suspension as treatment for my Parkinson’s Disease. ( I am a non diabetic. ) I also found the same leakage depressing the plunger with the BCise formulation. To try and solve this, I tried slowing down the speed I depressed the plunger, holding the pinched abdomen for at least 20 seconds afterwards, then releasing my pinched abdomen before slowly taking the pressure off the depressed pen against my skin. It still leaves a tiny spot of pooled exenatide suspension on the skin but not as much as before.

Hope this helps - all the best with your use of Exenatide and really hope it helps your PD symptoms.

Thank you! I’m very grateful for your help.

Hey, what's the quantity? And (just curious) can you buy exenatide just as a solution, and plain old syringes and needles? Like, the old-fashioned way?

in reply to amykp

2 mgI have a 5 mg prescription that I haven’t used but am considering

I’m not very big

I have a hard enough time with the normal pharma version

Hi. We were hoping to go on the Xanatide trial but unfortunately my husband failed the testing….do you think it is helping you at all with your Parkinsons? thanks

in reply to Horseriding4

I’m not sure. I’ve been taking it since late August 2021. I’m not worse than I was when I started but if I’m better it’s very subtle. I started Ambroxol in I believe late April 2021. Im more confident that decreased my symptoms.

Hi there, i am a 74yr old British female who is just starting my 18th yr since diagnosis. I am not diabetic but i do inject Apomorphine daily for my PD. This is subcutaneous and i presently use a pump which ensures even delivery. Prior to the pump i used pre-filled syringes. Perhaps you could explore the possibility of pump delivery as it is less stressful?
