Chronic Diarrhea or Colitis and Parkinson’s

I would be interested to know if anyone has chronic diarrhea, or colitis along with their Parkinson’s Disease? When the two conditions occur together, it is most likely a coincidence.

Having Parkinson’s does not protect you from any other diseases , but please let me know your expirience

I do not have Parkinson's and I am on this site because my husband does. I have a history of colitis and by eliminating wheat and taking no NSAIDs I have pretty much eliminated the symptoms. Everyone with symptoms probably has some unique cause.

The occurrence of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO in PwP is 45% or more depending on the study referenced :

gutpathogens.biomedcentral....

Two major symptoms of SIBO are diarrhea and abdominal pain among several others :

Thanks, Art. It was all new to me, I had not heard of SIBO, and was interested to learn about it. It needs more study.I still hope to see if anyone else on this site have the problem

Although SIBO is so common in PwP, I have not heard of anybody mentioning that they specifically have SIBO on this forum, but plenty of mention of digestive issues in general. I noticed in one of the small PwP/FMT studies, they mentioned that FMT was quite helpful at controlling SIBO. Considering that SIBO is essentially gut dysbiosis, that makes sense since FMT is well noted for improving gut dysbiosis.

FMT ??

FMT = Fecal Microbiota Transplantation = transplanting the feces from a screened healthy individual into a PwP or other diseases involving gut dysbiosis. In two small studies it significantly improved (50% +/-) motor and non motor symptoms in PwP.

I had colitis, the VA ER put me on a 2 week course of 2 antibiotics, I searched net for and found 1 reported case of colitis that cleared after stopping Levodopa. I was a week into the antibiotics and I stopped – I went 2 weeks with no PD symptoms. My PD doctor says no-way l-dopa caused and not to just stop taking l-dopa. That is when I searched the net and found the Article on “Bacteria in your gut thriving on Levodopa”. My PD doc hasn't explained why I could go a week without l-dopa,

Others have reported very significant reduction of PD symptoms to almost symptom free on this forum over the years, while others have specifically said that antibiotics were not helpful for temporarily alleviating their PD symptoms. Two antibiotics that I remember being reported as helpful were Clarithromycin and Doxycycline. Unfortunately it would be unhealthful to stay on either of these indefinitely if you happened to be someone who had improved PD symptoms while on them.

@chartist Very unhealthful !!! I think it is very important to not eat 30 min before and and at least 1 hr after. Not only because proteins interferes with absorption of L-Dopa. But, you need a section of empty small intestines which would also be low in the "Bacteria in your gut thriving on Levodopa"...
