Contact the company. Unless you’re on any kind of government insurance eg Medicare, Medicaid, VA, you should be able to get help for copays after your prescription drug plan pays. You can also get on the waitlist for help from nonprofits that provide financial assistance to patients with certain chronic conditions.

The pharmacy is trying to charge me $700 a month for the patch that is so crazy is just sad that our healthcare system does not allow people to get medications at affordable prices that actually may help them

There is a coupon and financial help go to their website.

There some reason why your physician is not prescribing levodopa medication? It has fewer adverse effects.

I have been on Carbidopa levodopa for years I get dyskinesia really bad on the smallest dosage she thinks maybe the patch being continuous release will cut back on the dyskinesia

Okay that is a good reason

Hi Park Bear, 😊What kind of adverse effects are you referring to? I am on the patch now because my gut was not absorbing the pills very well (terrible off times which were getting harder and harder to predict).

Be on the alert for impulse control disorders - compulsive gambling, eating, shopping, or sex. Also be on the alert for orthostatic hypotension - loss of blood pressure upon standing - manifests as lightheadedness. If either one of these adverse effects shows up it would be best to taper off the drug.

I honestly wonder if any boost in dopamine might do that… whether it be from sinemet or whatever medication. I guess you’re warning that the agonists like the neupro patch are stronger??

More than one study showing impulse control disorder much more common among dopamine agonist users than levodopa users, for example:

n.neurology.org/content/91/...

"In 306 patients without ICDs [impulse control disorders] at baseline...5-year cumulative incidence of ICDs...DA[dopamine agonist] ever users 51.5% ... DA never users 12.4% ... ICDs were associated with ever DA use (prevalence ratio 4.23, 95% CI 1.78–10.09). Lifetime average daily dose and duration of treatment were independently associated with ICDs with significant dose-effect relationships. Similar analyses for levodopa were not in favor of a strong association. ICDs progressively resolved after DA discontinuation."

There are several different dopamine receptors, designated D1-D5. Dopamine agonists stimulate these receptors differently than dopamine, which comes from levodopa.

I was able to benefit from a manufacturer's coupon which drastically reduced the cost of the patch. Look for it on manufacturer's web site or ask your pharmacy to help retrieve it.

With my insurance it was still going to be $1000 a month. I didn’t qualify for the financial assistance so I changed my Medicare supplement plan and got it down to $100 per month. We’re in that timeframe where you can make Medicare adjustments if you don’t qualify. Good luck

Hello thank you for the info unfortunately I do not have Medicare yet I am not old enough but I do have good commercial insurance through Ford I am hoping that I will be able to get some help through a pharmacy that my doctor is trying to work with it's just so unfortunate that these medications that may help people are not available to us due to such high-cost why would they not want to provide us with medications that may work it's just so sad

Anyone on my post that has used the new Pro patch or is on it currently can you tell me how it is working for you and if there are any side effects

You and your partner should be on the alert for impulse control disorders - compulsive gambling, eating, shopping, or sex. Also be on the alert for orthostatic hypotension - loss of blood pressure upon standing - manifests as lightheadedness. If either one of these adverse effects shows up it would be best to taper off the drug.

There other dopamine agonists in addition to the neupro patch. For example, generic pramipexole extended release is much cheaper:

goodrx.com/pramipexole-er

Generic ropinirole cheaper yet:

goodrx.com/ropinirole goodrx.com/requip-xl

The Neupro patch may be a bit less prone to impulse control disorder than these other two.

I used it for about a year at a very small dose--3mg. I WAS able to use the coupon, so it wasn't expensive at all--I think like $15/month? (and I'm not on medicare yet either.) In the beginning it made me quite nauseated, so beware, but that went away completely after a few weeks.

The bigger problem was that after about a year my skin began to react pretty badly and even after a single day the spots itched like crazy. After I pulled off the patches there were red spots that persisted forever. I don't think this happens to everyone, and it's hardly life-threatening, but it was annoying enough that I stopped.

My husband used it for about 10 years. He recently stopped , but we’re about to try it again. As I recall, the first side effect for him was nausea. He immediately got more energetic and less sleepy during the day and his movement improved.

He does not have tremors, so it doesn’t sound like you are the same type and it may effect you differently. He never had issues with compulsiveness from Neupro. He does now have cognitive impairment…was it caused by dopamine agonists or disease? We’ll likely never know.

A pro is that it delivers a steady dose all the time with no on and off times, so if you have those, it may be a benefit. You could get samples from your doctor first, to know if it helps before worrying about the insurance situation too much.
