Standing up from 🧘‍♂️

A funny thing happened to me today. I thought I’d share. I was walking with some friends and one remarked that a good indicator of general health was the ability to rise unaided from a seated cross legged pose. If you can do it without arms you’re very healthy, one arm for support less so and two arms to assist less than that etc (don’t fret. It’s two arms for most adults so you’ll be in good company!). Anyway, we all had a go and I could do it. Nobody was more surprised than I and I felt a little smug when others without a crappy neurological disease couldn’t do it. So apparently I’m very healthy but very ill as well. What a strange disease we suffer from! 🤷

See the video in the below link showing other people trying and you'll feel even better. If you do daily squats to build your leg muscle and strength you should be able to do it eventually.

How on earth did you do that? I don't have Parkinson's (hubby does), I go to the gym every day and do squats and even I find standing from a cross legged position without using my hands very difficult - can only do it by first rolling backwards. You are amazing jeeves!

With my more PD affected side I can stand up but only hold for a few seconds. Quite good with the other side.

Oh no, I wasn’t doing it correctly! I need one hand.

Thanks for sharing this, Adam! That’s a good thing that you could stand up unaided, like that! Wow! It’s been many years since I would have been able to do that! My balance is off just enough, that, now, if I tried, I’d make a laughing stock of myself! Ha! Anyway, I sure would feel smug, if I could do that, too! PWP all have various symptoms that differ from others, with diagnosed PD, so it’s true, it tis a strange disease, to deal with, especially, when one day, one can do a mobility task well, and then the next day, have a very difficult time, trying to do the same task! Unfortunately, it has been my experience, that some people believe I am faking some symptoms, at times, when, in reality, I’m not, so they aren’t at all empathetic with my stating that I have PD. Actually, I tell very few people that I have been diagnosed with PD! One medical person, had the gall to tell me, I should go have counseling, from a “shrink”! That did not go over well, with me, so I don’t consider that person to be a friend, of mine. For sure, having PD is, indeed, a fickle ailment to live with! Good humor is necessary, just to navigate PD, every day! Hope you are doing ok, and that your Havanese, gives you the support, and good times, that my dog gives me! Doug

Thanks so much Doug. Kindness should be your middle name. 😊🐶

I tried. No way to do it without using one arm.

Wow, I tried it. Could sit but I couldn't stand up. My hip pain was excruciating. :(

Keep doing this. Never stop. Once you stop you lose the ability.

I used to be able to spring up , can still get up without hands but not as graceful(esp with a bum knee). My mother without PD who is 73 and in good shape can not though. I think for me I work on the floor and often have to move around from sitting with my hands full to standing (I do vet acupuncture and often take needles out when sitting and then have to get up to dispose of them). So doing it often helps. Good to know it's a good thing!

Well done indeed! Not easy and just occasionally, some days I find it really hard to do, then the next day, piece of cake .

I used to stand on one foot and bring the other one up so I could tie my shoe laces. Now I have shoes with velcro straps and I still have to sit to get them on. Well done Myfatcat ,
