any one on or have tried amitriptyline for bowel spasms and hard cramping?

Hi, I was on it after a major flare up, its fab for neuropathic pain. Dose is 10mg and can be increased to 20mg if required. Higher doses are usually used for depression/anxiety. It can cause tiredness (hence why taken at night) but at lower doses this is rare - although knocked my bro out lol when he was on it.

i am on 10mg and I am very tired in the am when I have to get up for work, my mouth is also very dry, and I still have cramps, bloating and nausea.

Hi Sandybeach I have tried amitriptyline for bowel spasms ,but I came off them as they made me feel like a zombie, plus a really dry mouth,all side effects ,from this drug now I am in remission for about 18 months, had crohnes for about 24 years and I got under control with out any prescription drugs.

what was the dose? I have the dry mouth and hard to get up in the morning

I know it's been years since you posted this but I've been digging around online for ways to snuff out this Chron's issue for my daughter. She's been through the ringer and it doesn't look like anything is getting better. She's losing her mind, even though she's not showing it, I know she's hurting and tired of hurting. This is not a good mental state for a teenager.

They just prescribed the 10 mg amitriptyline dose today and I'm praying that it helps with her pain but both her and I would like her to be on little to NO drugs if possible. Could you please let me know what you've done to kick this Chron's issue. I'd truly appreciate it.

Hi, yeah 20mg and it was good for me in sense it kind of slowed me down as really active person in my twenty's and thirty's, it drained me, but was helpful for my nerves, i found no prescription drugs really helped me accept when i would have a really bad acute flare up and would have morphine, Buscopan, in A&E

Thanks for the question I have 5 dependents all relying on me to provide for them 4 children and wife on one income! the idea of being defeated by this debilitating condition was not an option I was never gonna let them down I am a fighter,and wanted be a good example to my children,not be defeated when adversary strikes,just when I was starting out with a great life to live with young children and a wonderful wife and mother I was getting this disease I had never heard off , and no one in my family had,then life really sucked for me,all those question why me? etc I have been really lucky and blessed with a loving and supporting family, with out them I would not carry on with the pain CD was giving me and all its associated issues that come with it,etc I can only say it was exhausting, and a living hell, things are much better now! still working full time, would love to retire but that's not looking likely to happen yet until my children are able to help with the mortgage etc and may be I can let go and get a break from this hamster wheel,I am still to young to retire,also I have had a op to remove a section of my bowel it really did help,

I was given amitriptyline for my ckd even though i have diverticulitis. I was taking 20mg every evening. I have now stopped taking this due to how it was effecting me inthe morning as i lacked clarity and my mind felt fogged, I was still experiencing cramps and pain with the diverticular disease.

sorry to hear this , it does not work for me either. did not like feeling in the morning.

People stop taking this too quickly - it takes several weeks for side effects to fade - start on 5mg and increase by 5mg every 2-3 weeks. Cut the pills if necessary. It really does work.
