Proctitis sigmoidoscopy outcome

I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy today. I was there for 3 hours, alone and feeling sad it was Valentines Day! I also feel confused by the result. The endoscopist was saying things like it all looks very good. No reference was made in the report to haemorrhoids. It refers only to mild proctitis to 10cm and UCEIS score 5 (B-1, V-w, E/U-2.) A first flexible sigmoidoscopy revealed inflammation in 2017 and I felt today the conclusion was no inflammation (I’ve been taking steroid rectal foam and pentasa suppositories). I still have ibs and piles problems and feel the message is that I’m ok now and just need to remain on Pentasa suppositories. I wish I didn’t take good news as confusion lacking answers or even feeling a fraud at times. But then I can’t be imagining symptoms.....

Hello - have you been diagnosed with proctitis? I have the same thing and was diagnosed 10 years ago. I take suppositories but when it gets bad I have to take steroids. I've found cutting out dairy and gluten helps plus I take acidophillus probiotics which has made a massive difference. Try the low FODMAP diet too as advised by my nutritionist. Hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon. Jo x

Thank you Jo. Yes it is proctitis as a diagnosis. Good to know if you are managing this overall. Good tip with the probiotics. I expect the hospital Gastroenterology I’ve seen once to discharge me now inflammation gone. Best wishes

Also, I noticed when I increase my thyroid medication or use contraceptives such as the pill or the coil it flares my colitis so I have to be really careful x

Hi Jo that’s helpful to know too. I’m wondering about asking to go onto the pill given the symptoms are most troublesome around my period. Will try to find out what works for me

Yes, I am convinced that the female hormones and colitis are linked. I've started on the depot injection and so far so good. I've had a few side effects but nothing major yet. Jo x

Hi Jo I saw my GP yesterday and asked to go on the pill not as a contraceptive but to stop my cycle. She thought it a very good idea, I’m being referred for piles banding too. Really helps when taken seriously x

Oh great, let me know how it goes. Sometimes starting on a contraceptive can flare colitis but it passes (apart from the coil, my colitis flare was so bad I ended up in hospital for a week). Can you please let me know what pile banding is? Jo x
