Favourite running tracks

So reading Fingaloo's post about running to Famous Blue Raincoat made me think about my favourite running tracks now I'm running without Laura.

I'm enjoying running to Chuck Berry (who I'd never normally listen to) Bruce Springsteens Hungry Heart works for me (tho' strangely Born to Run doesn't.) A bit of Pulp, a bit of Oasis, a bit of Orange Juice a bit of Talking Heads (um.... might be showing my age here) Surprisingly Michelle Shocked and KD Lang are making it onto my running play list in their more up tempo moments (Too Little Too Late is a great running track).

And for cool down music Peace at Last by Blue Nile can't be beat

What about you?

I've got plenty of time to make new running playlists at the moment, I've got a reeking cold and feel too crappy to run :(

This is my playlist at the moment-

Warm up: Gwen Stefani- What You Waiting For?

The Cure- Just Like Heaven

Kiss- God Gave Rock n Roll To You II (I need to do a playlist consisting entirely of cheesy 80s stadium rock. It will be EPIC)

Elvis Costello- (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding (my favourite running song ever)

Barenaked Ladies- It's All Been Done

Foo Fighters- All My Life

Elvis Costello- Radio Radio (yes, I'm a big fan)

QOTSA- No One Knows

Cool down: Pearl Jam- Alive (because I am at the end of a run, and rather pleased about it)

Hoping to see some inspiration for new running tunes!

If you make up that 80's stadium rock list, let me know. It's not my favourite stuff by any stretch but I reckon it'd be excellent music to run to.

I decided to have a go myself, I played a little fast and loose with the decade but the cheese is all there:

Kiss - Crazy Crazy Nights

Boston - More than a Feeling

Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone

Life Is Life - Opus

White Snake - Here I Go Again

Europe - The Final Countdown

Starship - We Built This City

Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Scorpions - Wind Of Change

Journey - Don't Stop Believing

Argent/Kiss - God Gave Rock n Roll To You

Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

Chicago - If You Leave Me Now

There were a few more 'classics' I thought of but they weren't available on Spotify. Any to add, this list needs more cheddar?

Brilliant, Fingalo - I'm an 80s girl at heart, so I love this! I think you need some Queen in there. How about Fat Bottomed Girls (one of my favourites :D ) or Don't Stop Me Now?

Fingalo profile image
FingaloGraduate in reply to Anniemurph

Unsure if that qualifies as cheese?

Anniemurph profile image

Good point - how about some Pat Benetar, then? Or - definitely - the Weather Girls - It's Raining Men :D

I know, it's great music to run to. If I keel over during a run and my rescuer finds out what I've been listening to I might get a bit defensive though.

Awesome choices. The Final Countdown! Fantastic.

How about-

Van Halen- Panama

Kiss- Rock n Roll All Nite

Def Leppard- Pour Some Sugar On Me

Alice Cooper- Poison

Motley Crue- Kickstart My Heart

That cheesy enough for you?

Fingalo profile image
FingaloGraduate in reply to Cazvs

Cheese me up baby!

That Def Leppard one is a cracker, sadly it's not available on Spotify.

Elvis Costello! genius - I love him and I've not thought about running to him, thanks

A bit of what I have on my playlist.....

Labrinth - written in the stars

Lenny Kravitz - are you gonna go my way

Lynyrd Skynyrd -freebird

Footloose from said film

Irene Cara - Flash dance

Salt and pepper - push it (always get visions of me rockin out at the school disco when I hear this)

Blue Oyter Cult - don't fear the reaper

....and many more. I can't take dance or drum and base as it speeds up my heart rate and stresses me out when running lol.

We listen to a lot of music, anything from classical, folk, metal to reggae, dancehall blues and jazz but running is a whole different ball game. I mean I can't imagine running to Nick Drake!

P.s. awesome post as I will be looking for inspiration too!

Very weird finding that my preferred running music (which isn't what I would usually listen to) matches the stuff my teenage son is listening to and writing... (in fact he is supposed to be writing me some to my requested BPM but he is incredulous that I could possibly be needing anything above 155)

I've also listened to the Ouch! BBC disability podcasts and I know I am not the only one to do that whilst running.

Proclaimers -

Life with you, 500 miles and I'm on my way

Peter Gabriel -

Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill

Queen -

Bohemian Rhapsody and Don't stop me now

Bruce Springsteen -

Born to Run and Thunder Road

Kaiser Chiefs - I predict a riot

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet home Alabama

Leonard Cohen - Don't go home with your hard-on (because that song makes me smile!)

Corner shop - Brimful of Asha

Also a selection of Oasis, Paul Simon's Graceland album, Stereophonics.

Obviously I can't play all that on a run so I keep myself entertained with shuffle :-)

I chop & change but the one track that always gives me a boost is 'Harder, better, faster, stronger' by Daft Punk (I live in hope that by listening to it I will miraculously become so).

I often favour Queen & 'Don't Stop Me Now' has been known to speed me up.

Funny you should mention Hungry Heart, I believe there isn't a better opening line in any song ever written.

Mrs Fingalo and I have music on from the time we get up (I even have it on in the shower) and share a similar taste to many of you guys by the look of this blog. I learned my lesson though, this morning was the first time I just picked any old playlist instead of making up a specific running one, that won't happen again.

runner45 profile image
runner45Graduate in reply to Fingalo

Hungry Heart is genius

but my best ever opening line "I don't believe in an interventionist God" (Nick Cave natch)

Fingalo profile image
FingaloGraduate in reply to runner45

Great line, great song!

Did you see the gig they released on YouTube last week? It was only up for 24hrs and was brilliant. Played the whole of the new album and then some old numbers.

As I said earlier, I am an 80s girl, but having teenage daughters brings some odd stuff into my playlists occasionally. I am very fond of Let It Rock (Kevin Rudolf), and Low (Flo Rida) makes me smile, and my current shameful running track (ssh, don't tell anyone) is You Light up My Life (1D).

Updated list. I've tried not to stray from the remit but some will be down to taste. I've only included those suggestions available on Spotify.

Boston - More than a Feeling

Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone

Life Is Life - Opus

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

Europe - The Final Countdown

Starship - We Built This City

Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Scorpions - Wind Of Change

Journey - Don't Stop Believing

Argent/Kiss - God Gave Rock n Roll To You

Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

Chicago - If You Leave Me Now

Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart

Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger

Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love

Air Supply - All Out Of Love

Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You

Foreigner - Cold As Ice

John Farnham - You're The Voice

Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years

Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield

REO Speedwagon - Take It On The Run

REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You

REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling

I've just ordered 101 Running Songs (amazon.co.uk/101-Running-So... so hopefully having that lot on shuffle will keep me going for quite some while. It's my graduation run this morning - woohoo - so I'll do the three C25K+ podcasts and then see what happens.

I'm feeling bereft. Phone jack knackered. Running in silence. I've been laughing my head off at these lists. Respectfully of course. That's it I need a new phone then I'll be on to spotify in an instant. It's foreigner that did it!

Though I must say I'm up for a bit of nick drake. Maybe on the cool down?
