A nice gentle 5k today, with a twist....

Out of my scratcher two minutes before the bells this morning, cutting it fine but I woke out of a dream the like of which were I to elucidate further, would have anyone who reads it suggesting I might wish to avail myself of psychological counselling.

However as I now tend to use Dale's posts as a gauge, as fecked up as it was, I'm still quite sane in comparison....

A fabulous day again, nice and dry with next to no sea breeze, perfect for a run. Having walked the five, I selected a random Spotify playlist, tapped the MapMyRun app and set off. After my excessive run on Tuesday I'd decided to stick to 5k today, it seems the idea is to mix up the runs so in the build up to 10k so I saw no need to give myself a hard time.

Well the idea was that I wouldn't beat myself up but I was also well aware that previously, a bad run has often succeeded a good one, no matter the distances involved, therefore I tried to head out with that in mind and not expect an easy ride.

Thankfully it must have worked as I found the whole run relatively comfortable. And I must emphasise the 'R' word.

As early as the first and second km split I was considering going against my plan and doing 6k instead and continued to toy with the idea throughout most of the jog but the argument that I was in no rush and an easyish run would be a nice reward won through, mainly because as I've mentioned lately, I really do need to find a way to enjoy the actual runs if I'm to keep doing this thing. I would love to know the secret of those who do enjoy them.

I did my usual 5k route and other than the dog walker and a sole runner late on, I didn't see a soul. MMR guy simply interupted various great tunes until he was telling me I'd reached the 4k mark and it was then that my man Leonard started. Now Famous Blue Raincoat is my favourite Cohen song, indeed it's high on my list of songs by anyone, however if you're familiar with it, you'll know it's not ideally suited to running, it's tempo being more likely to put you into the recovery position. It's more cerebral than physical, more Mogadon than Amphetamine, Sistine Chapel than Banksy, if you catch my drift?

Oh all right then, it's feckin' SLOW!!

I did say the selection of the playlist was random....

So slow it made me feel as if I was crawling along, therefore I decided to make the last half kilometre a bit interesting and kicked on, just to see how much I could increase the pace and for how long, the intent being to make it to the end. It also had the added bonus of getting what was ultimately a pretty boring run over that bit quicker.

I have to admit, I was quite surprised at how much faster I was able to spin my legs given I'd ran for over half an hour at that stage and while I doubt I'd be able to do it for a whole kilometre, half that distance proved doable and gave me pause to reconsider the belief I'd built up that I'm better at being a tortoise than a hare.

I hadn't intended to but it's made me think I might give the 5k+ podcasts a go, just to add some variety to things.

It's my first exposure to yoga on Saturday afternoon, I haven't a clue what to expect, how intense it's likely to be etc. I usually run on a Saturday morning but as I said to Mrs Fingalo, perhaps I should give it a miss if some hippy woman is going to be expecting me to sit on my arse with my legs behind my head chanting nonsense for a couple of hours....?

running to Cohen - excellent! I've got two Cohen tracks on my playlist and they are both really great for running - First We Take Manhattan and Closing Time. Not sure I fancy FBR though.

Good luck with the yoga, I tried it once, twisting my legs up in the air I did a tremendous fart. And nobody laughed. And I thought these people are not my people

Aye, there's some tempo to both of those songs, unfortunately I chose the wrong playlist.

As for your yoga experience, thanks a feckin' LOT!

I'm going to be as paranoid as feck now!

Not much good as a yoga teacher if not! I'm sure you'll liven things up no end... :P

When I did yoga years ago, the bit I found most stressful was - the relaxation! Mind you, I was expecting at the time, so lying flat on the floor wasn't all that comfortable. I kept worrying that I'd need to get up to go to the loo, and everyone would look at me!

I really ought to find out where there's a class round here, and take it up again, because I'm really not bendy at all now.

Ah but there's patience, then there's the special level of patience I seem to require of folk! Mrs Fingalo would win the world championship every year were there one. And my sister would probably come second and she's not even in the same country as me!

Have to admit to some nerves but feck it, I spoke with the lady and she said she wouldn't chuck me out of the group if I farted so I said that's good enough for me, book me in!

Okay I'm joking but she did say I should be okay to do my run in the morning.

You make me laugh so much! I'm impressed you're going along. Hope it's good!

You got your graduate badge! When did that happen? Well done :)

Farting very normal at yoga. Don't eat beans the night before. Also remember it's not competitive. I nearly did myself an injury the first time, all the other women were way more bendy than me even though they were all in their 60s. They'd had more practice but being half their age I thought I should be able to keep up. I felt that the next day.

Injured while in competition... That would take some explanation!

Feck!

For a second there I thought you meant not to be competitive at the farting! I had visions of saying "right, you think that's good?" Then hanging off the curtain rail, opening the window and letting one rip into the day with all my might.

Badge came on Monday I think Cazvs, grad run last Saturday.

Hi. How do you get mapmyrun to tell you how far you've run. Is it the MVP bit I haven't registered on. I've had to go back to the podcasts as I still need the encouragment of a voice every so often but would much prefer my own music.

I went into settings then voice feedback, turn it on and it gives you options for info you want to be given. I hope this helps.

Thanks. Will give that a go.
