There's a couple of different websites out there. I use gb mapometer:

gb.mapometer.com/

The open SM background is great for footpaths not covered by google maps or hidden beneath trees in the aerial imagery.

It's a bit annoying having to draw in your route though!

I use the sports tracker app. It's very accurate and reliable and I've never lost the GPS signal yet.

This site (Where's the path) is good for viewing OS maps and google side by side. Though there is a limit to the daily free use of OS maps (and today it's already been used up - that's pretty unusual though - and you can still use it, but on out-of-date maps - which have their own charm!). You can plot your route, and it will also plot you a cross-section of your route, showing how steep the hills are.

Thanks all, might have to start mapping when I get home, my phone goes mad sometimes anyway and re starts the podcast (very very annoying), even when locked, so not sure how it would cope having 2 things running.

I use Endomondo on an HTC wildfire. Had problems with it originally but it seems to be working OK now.

You can get access to a measuring tool in Google maps - you have to get it from the Maps lab - on bottom left of the screen.

the website walk jog run is worth a look too.

You can access OS maps by signing in to the Walk Highlands site which has lots of walks all across Scotland. Once you look at the map of a route you can move around over all GB.

Before I bought a Garmin I used geodistance.com. Lots of clicking involved but fairly accurate (I compared with the Garmin afterwards). You can click on anywhere but small footpaths through woods for instance aren't always on the map so you have to estimate these yourself. Have a look at your area on the map and you'd see if it would be any use to you.

What kind of phone have you got? Some have GPS problems that can be fixed. My husband just fixed my Galaxy S for me and the GPS is much better now. I use Run Double on my runs. For planning routes I use a website like walk jog run or similar. It also has routes that other local runners have uploaded.

I use Endomondo pro on my HTC Desire. It's now my old phone so it doesn't have a SIM on board but does all the GPS and Wifi so it can link to the website and update that way. Had problems at times in the past but now it seems to be very good. Also have Runtracker but haven't used it except the once since Endomondo started working properly again.

Since I bought a Garmin ( in amazon sale) I never looked back. Before then I simply mapped my runs on arrival home on Spark People fitness tracker, worked very well and calculated the speed and calories. I just did not like running with a bulky smart phone in my pocket. But a running watch made all the difference to my tracking and motivation.
