Moving my running indoors for the winter weeks. Treadmill advice please.

Since last Saturday's 5k I have done no running until this morning when I did another 5k in 31 minutes. I work from home on a Friday so can wait a little later for daybreak to go for my run. However with the dreadful weather we're having and me needing to get in to work earlier and earlier and finishing later and later, running during my working week is just not happening. I don't enjoy running in the dark and seem to be picking up cold after cold from my students so being out in the cold and wet isn't the best thing for me to be doing.

So I have bitten the bullet and bought a treadmill on eBay. It's arriving tomorrow and I'm looking forward to mixing things up with some indoor runs during the week and getting outdoors at the weekends. Hopefully this will get me back on track to maintain 3-4 runs each week.

Some questions - is it better to use treadmills upstairs or downstairs? We don't have a garage so these are the only options. I've heard running on treadmills is easier than outdoors so do I need to run for longer to compensate for this? Since I run 5k in about 30 minutes give or take, do I need to be running at 10kph? Any advice gratefully received.

My cross trainer is upstairs and we set it up with a rug and a piece of board underneath so the weight is spread and there's no rocking around. The treadmill will be a bit louder as you'll have the sound of your footfall to take into consideration so you won't want it in the room above where everyone else is watching telly !

You should be able to set different programs on the treadmill to replicate hills of varying gradients and that will make it more challenging and more interesting. You'll probably find it more interesting to follow some sort of interval training on the treadmill, such as the Speed or Stepping Stones podcasts. You should see more improvement in your running if you include some interval training, rather than just always sticking to the same speed.

Enjoy :-)
