Pushed hubby out the door to go for a bike ride yesterday as it was such a beautiful day and it seemed a shame to be indoors. When he got back I'd raked all the leaves in the garden and was knocking off for the day. He returned the favour by pushing me out of the door to go for a run. I was so glad he did - it was a perfect crisp autumn day with the sun shining and leaves falling all around. The ipod battery died after about 25 mins (Goodbye Julie!) but it was so lovely somehow it didn't matter.
This morning after dropping the little'un to football practice I just started running home to keep warm and somehow fell into a really good rhythm. So instead of the usual 5 mins footling about with the technology I just kept running. Don't really know how far or even exactly how long I ran but it was a liberating experience. I discovered that I notice much more when I'm not listening to music. I know lots of folks on here love running 'naked' but I never thought I would as I've always struggled with pacing, disliked hearing myself puffing along and liked the distraction of the music especially in the early days when it was more of a slog.
The list of things I'm doing now that I thought I never would gets longer and longer. Running (of course) but also running 5k, running in public, turning up at the school in my kit, choosing to delay my lunch so I could run and now running without music. Who knows what will come next!

I agree with you Pingle! I too thought I would find it hard without my music but I dont have it on my evening runs due to safety - just want to be aware of what is going on around me - and found it was fine. Its funny how you dont sound as huffy and puffy as you think!
I went out yesterday morning with the OH without music too and it was nice to actually talk (well he did most of the talking; I was concentrating on just breathing!!) and to enjoy the beautiful day with no distraction.
I have got to add this to my list of things to do very soon. I have a half marathon in march & Im not allowed earphones of any sort so have got to pluck up the courage to "go it alone" one of these days.
After my yoga class last night I was in my kit anyway so decided to run home, without music. Not a total first (I don't have music at Parkrun) but rare for me - it was fine & actually I wouldn't run in the dark with plugs in for safety reasons. I might try a longer day run without, but will carry my player just in case.
I still feel a bit embarrassed to be seen in my running gear and so restrict myself to early mornings or dark evenings which is silly. I love running to music, it keeps me going! Perhaps I should try it without though. Well done on all your firsts and thanks for sharing.
