On W8R1...started off slow and steady, also really working the breathing thing although that is tough...still, as I approached the last 5 minutes before the 28 minutes were up, I noticed I was feeling some pain about 2 inches above my right ankle (tendon area?)...I wasn't running fast, but I did slow down. I finished the run, walked the cool down, and did my post-run stretch, but I know something isn't right and I'm feeling pain, not excruciating but it's there...causing me to limp a bit. When I got home, I could see there wasn't any swelling but I took an ibuprofen straight away, put a cold pack on it and elevated it.
I went last week for a decent pair of running shoes at a specialty sports shop and they had to order them in my size (said it'd take about 5 days to come in)...so I'm thinking these cheapos I'm currently wearing are not doing the job properly...and wouldn't you know it--the shop called me about 2 hours after I got home today (Murphy's Law, I guess).
Up to now, I have not had any injuries, but I do think I'll be nursing my current condition and taking at least the next 2 days off...oh yeah, in honor of National Run Day here in the States...the fact that I did run a full 28 minutes (never ever did that before!) and also having a slight set-back, well, I guess it's all relevant--LOL!
Good for you for running 28 minutes (a big, big deal!). Also, I am glad to hear you did exactly the right thing with rest, elevation and cold pack on the ankle. It sounds like waiting a couple days before going out again is just good sense.
Thanks so much for the encouragement...I do want to be sensible about this new undertaking...and I really am enjoying running (something I hated in school/phys ed classes!). I haven't rushed anything and reading the various blogs, even before I had an injury, I took note of what others did for their injuries. I'm a late bloomer (50+) and now have the time to really be involved in my physical health, along with trying new physical outlets...this is now fun for me!
I am nursing a sore calf and treating it exactly the same as you. I have also been advised to try a compression sleeve (ordered mine through Amazon) but I dont know whether this would be useful for a tendon injury. There are some good websites if you google "tips for running injuries" or similar. I have had some good advice.
Many thanks for the encouragement...I love this blog site...wonderful community! I think it's so great that others, even when they have had injuries that they share what has happened and how they're working through it. I'll definitely be googling info just to make sure I'm doing all I can to get back on the running trail (sensibly, of course). I do want to get back out there...this running is really helping the rest of my mental health, I am loving the release it gives me from day-to-day problems...and it gives me time to think and solve some things. Looking forward to running again...
