How do you know when it's time for new trainers?

Apart from the obvious falling apart or smelling so bad they could run on their own I was just wondering what signs to look for which would indicate a new pair is in order?

They say around 500 miles! I had mine over 5 years ago and dont think they had done anywhere near that as I had hardly used them till I started this programme in late November.

I did decide to treat myself to a new pair at the running shop on Thursday though, just in case lol! Never averse to a new pair of shoes!

The man in the running shop loves me! So much for running being a relatively inexpensive sport - I am the type who, once I get into something, have to have all the kit!

Seriously they dont actually show too much wear (unless you over or under pronate seriously). Are you feet and legs ok when and after you run?

So far so good but I'm only just starting week 9 so it's more a question for the future! It's gonna take me a while to cover 500 miles! :)

I was just wondering this myself! The Inov8 studded fell running shoes are particularly popular in my chosen "sport" (dog agility) and a few years ago, questions were asked about the durability of these when people experienced the reinforcing mesh at the top of the shoes cracking/tearing where permanent creases formed. The company came back with a statement that it would be normal for runners to change their shoes every six months, and I've heard similar advice about other makes - but have always wondered what milage is involved here.

In week 3 of C25K, I treated myself to a pair of Reebok ladies running shoes (last year's colour at £22 instead of £60 from a factory outlet) and they've worked well for me. I've decided that when I complete week 9, I'll treat myself to a new pair of posh, no-expenses-spared running shoes, in the hope that this will motivate me to keep going.
