Heart Rate Monitors - are they any good?

I have been looking at heart rate monitors(HRTs) and wondering if they are worth getting. If they are, whats the cheapest that is worth buying? And what extra do I get that would make it worth getting a more expensive one?

My Garmin (410) comes with one, its comfortable to wear though I have only used it with the HM twice so far. At the moment I am more interested in route distance/speed rather than heart rates but I wanted something that would meet my needs as a I become a more experienced runner. I love Gary the Garmin, he was £150 from Amazon and a birthday present from doh.

This tells you which Garmin does what:

And this is the data you get out of it

I'm sure someone else can point you towards the Nike and other types.
