Garmin Forerunner 110 - advantages over MapMyRun & other similar apps?

I really want a Garmin Forerunner 110 - I'm a bit of a gadget person - but I'm finding it hard to justify the cost.

What are the advantages over simply using an App such as MapMyRun ? And would I need any extras, such as a foot pod ?

Any thoughts welcome, thank you :-)

Ive just bought one & it came with the heart monitor strap as well. previously I had been mapping my run on womens running site to try & figure out distance, which obviously takes time & lots of effort.

the watch is great. I think it is probably an entry level thing but you are able to see distance covered & time on the same "page" then you can switch screen to see the heart rate. just knowing how far Id run is worth the outlay for me. mine was £75 second hand off ebay so you can pick them up cheaper if you shop around.

very easy to upload all the info onto the internet. you simply attach the watch to a sort of dockin/charging clip & plug that into the computer. setting it up was easy aswell. it must have been as I did it all by myself without having to ask hubby.

I dont have a fancy phone so apps arent any good to me so this suits my needs perfectly.

Oh & it gives info like how long each mile took/pace & graphs for gradient & HR so you can compare these to see if HR was high when tackling hills :)

Thanks, Shelley. I do like the idea of checking time and distance while I'm running. It's too distracting to try and look at the phone while I'm running.

I use the Voice Feedback setting on the iphone Map My Run app to tell me what my current speed/progress, etc is. It cuts in over Laura's podcast at my pre-set intervals to give me the info so I don't have to physically look at the phone. Must admit I'm tempted by a Garmin but the Map My Run app is sort of making it not justified at the moment.

I'll have to look into that on my HTC phone. At the moment, I have the podcasts on an MP3 player but perhaps I should try them on the phone (may have to get a micro-SD card). I could then wait for a bargain price on a Garmin.

I love mine! It's so much easier to use whilst out running - quick look at your wrist rather than having to get phone out pocket, unlock etc etc. Now that I'm doing my own runs I set out and use the watch to know when to turn round (if not on a circular route) and it helps with the pace...as you can take a quick look and know how fast /slow you are going.

I have too many things in my pockets anyway - Airways gum, inhaler, tissues, gloves, keys, phone, mp3 player......if I could lose some of that perhaps I'd be quicker....

Think we could get sponsored by Garmin for the amount of business we have put their way :-D

Perhaps they'd give me a discount then................. ;-)
