Roughly how long would you expect a pair of running trainers to last?

I'm at Wk3r2 and I am currently building a plan with rewards along the way and a new pair of trainers would be a good one at some point, so any clues would be good. Got to keep myself motivated!

I've read in running magazines that you should change your trainers every 500 miles! Don't know if I will do that, probably will change them when they get a bit worse for wear or when the support feels a little suspect! Perhaps once a year?

I guess it depends on how far you run, how heavy you are and what sort of runner you are. When you get your new trainers make sure you go to a runner's shop to get assessed on your gait and running style, that is if you over or under pronate or are normal! There are different trainers for each style.

Thanks Caz9 - I did get my shoes from a running shop, where they assessed my gait and will certainly go back, I just forgot to check how long they should last.

I agree I probably need to just keep checking the trainers themselves, however if 500 miles is about right, then I'm not going to need any until after finishing c25k!

So I'm now thinking of different rewards to motivate myself!

Hi

the sales guy at my running shop told me around 300 miles. My reward after 9 weeks will be a wardrobe overhaul. Incentives are great.I'm at wk3 r3 today and can't believe I am looking forward to it so much ;-)

Good running!

Hi Misstrolly,

Wardrobe overall sounds like a good move to me, great idea!

Just got back from wk3 r2 and feeling good!

Good running to you too!

A marathon running friend of mine says about 500 miles too.

And if you get really serious you could get yourself a Garmin Forerunner 110 - to track where you've been, how far, how long and your pace. Absolutely love mine. Check out Amazon, as they sometimes do some good deals on there. Price changes on a daily, or is it weekly, basis.

Thanks for the tip on the Garmin Forerunner 110 - I'll take a look on Amazon (my favourite shop) and their prices definitely change daily :-)

Thanks Carole.

I've just been looking at the Garmins, but think I'm already getting pretty much the same information from my Samsung Galaxy S2 Phone with "MapMyFitness" App. The only thing I'm missing is a heart rate monitor, but I'm not overly bothered about that at the moment. I have just ordered an armband as that would be handy, as I'm currently with it precariously in my shorts pocket.

I bought a hrm chest strap with a watch from argos for about £20. bought it as it is "polar" so worked with my treadmill & the ones at the gym. when I went running last week outside I wore the watch as it has a stopwatch on it aswell & I dont have a fancy phone with android or internet. am going to pop some sort of gps thing on hubbies android phone for running outside though so the suggestions made by others were very helpful.

Thanks Shelley, I just discovered that the MapMyFitness app I'd been using is pretty inaccurate so I'm swapping over to Endomondo which gets rave reviews from Android users and also has a bluetooth heart monitor available as a later add-on. Might even make it one of my rewards! :-)

i would say from experience that a pair should last about 6 months. check for wear and tear monthly though and always avoid putting the shoes in a washing machine as this does damage the fabric
