Welcome mummy1988, I was a similar weight and hadn't run for 20 years when I started C25K and I loved it. The fear factor is definitely the biggest deterrent.

When you're looking to the end of each run ... it can seem very far away. So don't. I found that when I stopped putting pressure on myself to finish the run and just thought, 'I'll do the best I can', it was easier to get to the end.

Thank you babe forgetting in touch well I just weighed myself and I weigh 11st 1 lb so I have lost few pounds in 2 weeks it’s not much but it’s something I will do my first run after lunch and once I finished housework too xx

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting started on your fitness and also on quitting smoking. We’re a friendly bunch on here so do jump on and share how you’re getting on. We’ll be cheering you on.

I found c25k to be really good for my mental health. It really lifted me up and also ensured I left the house too. Nothing like those scheduled sessions to drive me on and nothing like some exercise to make me give me a bit of a lift.

Make sure you’re taking things slow and steady. You’ve got a busy exercise schedule with all the time at the gym so do make sure you’re getting enough rest.

Let us know how your first run goes. Good luck.

Thank you so much for getting in touch it means a lot yes I go to the gym for my fitness classes Monday to Friday and I rest in the evenings and at the weekend but I didn’t go gym yesterday so I though after lunch and I finished my housework then I will go for a run as it’s nice outside today and yes I will let you know how my first run goes and I weighed myself and I now go 11st 1lb so I am losing weight at a slow and steady pace so all is going well

Welcome!

Are you hoping to use some sort of plan from the gym, or are you going to use Couch to 5K as your running plan?

Indoors or outdoors? If outdoors you've picked the ideal time of the year to be starting.

And I really wouldn't be concerned about the weight. Many of us had a little extra when we started out. Some have lost a bit, some haven't. A lot of us who thought we were fit found out we weren't in reality (myself included).

One important thing is that you mustn't starve yourself or go on too drastic a diet when doing exercise: it will be counter-productive. You will need a certain amount of nutrition for the body's maintenance and repair.

I'd recommend looking at the FAQ posts: healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

And this video might help you not get injured:

And finally congratulations on taking the hardest step and making that decision to start. 👍

Wow thank you for this and no I don’t starve myself anymore I eat a lot better now like I don’t eat much carbs I don’t eat bread or chocolate or have sugar at all I eat more chicken and white fish and lean meat I eat brown rice and lots veg and some fruit but my diet is good as I don’t have IBS anymore so I eat 3 meals a day but smaller portions you really seem to know your stuff so let me know if I am doing anything wrong plus I drink way more water now too

You will need some "energy" in the mix. There are probably enough incidental carbs in most of what you're already eating to cover that.

You won't need to add any extra fuel to do C25K. Drinking plenty of fluids is good.

You don't need to carry fluids on any C25K run. I don't carry any unless the run is going to take me over 90 minutes or it's a hot day and the run will be over an hour.

Why won’t I need to Cary my own water?

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate in reply to Mummy1988

Because if your normal hydration is good, you won't need it. A small drink before and a drink after will be plenty. None of the sessions in the C25K require you to run for more than half an hour.

If you carry water, it's just another thing to carry. If you have it in one hand it might unbalance you.

Okay very true

At the other extreme, I'm planning a long run tomorrow morning.

It's probably going to be about ten miles or more. For that I will be taking something to drink with me in a backpack with a fluid bladder with a tube I can sip from on the hoof.

Because on a much longer run you deplete the glycogen stores, I'll also be taking some sugary snacks with me.

You gave up smoking 2 weeks ago and you’ve lost weight? wish I’d known you when I gave up and steadily gained even though i was running. As others say take it steady, this isn’t a race but we will all cheer you home at the end of each run and watch your progress with joy

I gave up smoking in January 2020 and promptly gained a stone and a half, I’ve lost the half stone. Not run so much these last few months but still run regularly, it’s our 3 year anniversary of starting C25K tomorrow so will get out for a run even if short, I’m going into hospital on Tuesday so currently isolating. A busy job more than full time hours most weeks means we don’t have loads of spare time.

Well done on your quit journey, seems you are managing it well, there is a Health unlocked quit support forum which is as supportive as this one .

Where can I find the other one? If your in Essex (Southend on sea ) then we could meet up after your well and could run together babe thank you yeah it’s been hard and my fear is if I give up smoking I would swap it for food and get fat my biggest fear I life is to get fat I have quit so many times before but never worked as I was scared 😱 so I got the all clear to join the gym so now I know I will be okay as I have swapped smoking for the gym and healthy living and eating xx
