Holiday dilemma

I need some advice from you guys. I’ve completed 1 consolidation run and aim to continue this for the next couple of weeks. However we have managed to book a week away in 2 weeks but the temperature is going to be about 35degC. I really struggle to run in the current heat in the UK so usually go out about 6AM (I still get very hot) Should I continue while away or have a week off? I don’t want to fall off the running wagon so to speak Help!

Thank you 😊

I think you should have at least one short run at the coolest time of day when you are on holiday, that will keep you from as you say. "fall off the running wagon" have a great holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will absolutely take your advice and if I can get a run in I shall 😊

It all depends on your age, fitness level and general health. You have only completed one consolidation run, and 35 Celsius is very hot. Even at 06:00 the temperature will still be hot, therefore you need to understand the effects of dehydration and exercising in hot weather. The NHS has good advice on their website.

Do you know if there is a gym in the hotel, or nearby where you could use a treadmill? Perhaps you may wait until you get to your destination to make a final decision. Then decide on how long you want to run for.

Good luck and happy safe 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Sound advice Dave thank you. And I never thought about a gym, after some research there appears to be one really close to where we’re staying. Hopefully they will have a day/weekly rate to let me use their treadmill 😀

You will lose no discernible condition in the first two weeks of non running, as stated in the guide to the plan.

Thank you, I will keep that in mind if I’m not allowed to use the gym.

I certainly wouldn't run in 35°. It can get to that, and more, in the summer here (Massif Central, France) and it's really not compatible with safe, enjoyable running. If you enjoy gyms, then why not, but personally I wouldn't stress it - if you have a week off it's not going to make a significant difference. Enjoy your holiday!

Thank you. The more I look at it the more I’m inclined to have a week off. It’s 29 here today so I went out at 5:30 this morning but I still struggled. Will take up swimming for a week lol!

If you would go out for a walk in it, my view is that it is fine to go for a short gentle run, whilst of course picking your time and shade if you can. Take your kit and play it by ear. I would go out in the noonday sun (suitably attired, including head covering, and slathered) rather than use a gym (which in present circumstances involves what IMHO is too high a risk of never being able to run again, unlike not running for a couple of weeks as IannodaTruffe points out)

Thank you for your advice, i really appreciate it. I think I will just have a week off if it feels to hot and stop stressing 😊

It's been 18°C in the early mornings where I'm staying at the moment, and very humid. I've been struggling with runs, often saying "enough" after just 2km, returning from the run wringing with sweat.

I'd seriously consider not doing any running at all at 30°C if you're not acclimatised to it.

Thanks nowster- same here, I keep going out but really early but like you I’m struggling with the heat. The closer the holiday gets the more I’m thinking to just have the week off!

When I was out the other day it was 30 according to weather channel. I went out in the morning for something else so my run was 3 pm so maybe go for a walk first to gauge the heat and if you feel like it you can break into a slow jog which was my pace with the emphasis on slow when I went out.
