First run

Hi all

Did my first run and it went kinda meh.

I've not run in years and I'm currently trying to lose weight after some lockdown gains. My run this evening was so so, from the 3rd minute I struggled and had to walk after about 45 secs, my legs got so heavy and my lungs just couldn't take anymore, I guess I managed about 5/6 mins of running out of the 8

Feeling deflated but I'll go again Wednesday.

You got off the couch. That's a win in itself.

Don't worry about it, just keep at it, it does get easier. It's taken me about 10 weeks to get to week 5, I am finding all of the runs very hard work!

Hello and welcome.

I was exactly the same on my first run but I persevered and repeated weeks. Looking back I think I was just trying to run too fast in those early weeks and once I slowed down and found my pace I found I no longer needed to repeat weeks.

I graduated in September and try to do 5 k 2-3 times a week. I still run at a very steady pace so it takes me longer than 30 minutes but I am sticking to the pace that suits me.

Good luck with the remainder of the programme.

Congratulations on getting off the couch and getting out there. I couldn't do the first runs either, and have never been a runner before. I'm now starting the final week, so keep at it and don't let the gremlins tell you any different. Best of luck.

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

Slow down.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

This sounds like my first two runs... then I learned to slow right down after watching the videos and it all became a little more manageable after that.

Please don’t be disheartened, you’ve started and that’s a huge achievement in its own right. Well done 👍🏼
