Help! Stuck on week 4 run 1!

Hello all!!

I’m so disappointed and frustrated with myself; having completed weeks 1, 2 and 3 I got up to start week 4 this morning- but I failed!! I just couldn’t get through the 5 minute run. Before anyone jumps in to remind me to slow jog, I am definitely doing this- and honestly don’t think I could’ve gone any slower without walking. I could talk during my run, but was gasping for breath as soon as I went to walking speed. According to the ‘health’ app on my iPhone I was going slower than all of my week 3 runs- so what gives? I was really tired but I’ve been tired on other runs, so I’m not sure what happened.

Did anyone else have an ‘off’ run? Any tips? I’m feeling so disappointed in myself- and also hoping week 3 is not my ‘max point’ 😬😔

Hope everyone is well and has a really lovely day!!

Everything going on in our lives can impact on our performance as a runner. Restedness, hydration and nutrition are at the top of my list of variables that need to be optimised to enable enjoyable running.

This post expands on the theme. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

It is possible to run on the spot and many people's jog is slower than their brisk walk.......that is fine.

If you can't breathe fully and deeply then you are simply going too fast.

Everyone has off runs, drink lots of water, eat a banana beforehand if you need energy, when you get out of breath start to trundle slowly until you get your breath back, forget about pace and distance until after c25k, you are building stamina japanese running style, good luck!!

Thank you! My friend has suggested I repeat week 3 again, but I’m unsure? I managed to complete week 3 ok, and I suspect today I was still tired from lots of exercise on Saturday. This morning’s attempt has really knocked my confidence from the success of week 3!

No if you completed week 3 move forward, thats a huge achievement in itself!!

You need to set yourself up to win, if you know you are tired from extra exercise then have an extra days rest, especially on longer runs later on lots of people find they need two days between runs

dont do too much while you are doing c25k as it does take it out of you I find

So have a reset today, day off tomorrow and then back on it wednesday and go as slow as you possibly can, xx

Thank you so much, H4CS . I’m going to give it another go as soon as feeling ready to try again. So disappointing BUT I’m feeling more positive again following your posts!! Thank you so much for your support ❤️

Hey, I hear your frustration. It’s ok. If you completed all the runs in previous weeks then you’re ready for week 4. No need to repeat week 3 runs, you just need to keep going.

It wasn’t a fail, it was a practice today. Like others have said - you probably needed an extra days rest.

Some of us had runs where we barely made it, some of us had to take an extra days rest, you have to understand what is going on- you’re asking your body to get off the sofa and run. It takes time to adjust!

Don’t beat yourself up about it, take a rest day and you’ll be ok. Stop worrying about your pace too...you have other weeks to think about that. 😊

Thank you!! I’m going to try week 4 run 1 again tomorrow. And then try again if I still can’t do it!! But thank you for your upbeat advice; I felt even worse when my friend suggested I redo week 3 as I’d felt SO good for finishing it on Saturday (and with energy left!) that I don’t want to stick to that- I want to move forwards! REALLY love reading your progress SassyF and well done on getting so far! I honestly felt so disappointed this morning, and kept thinking ‘I’m not sure I’m ever going to be able achieve this’- so thanks for your kind and supportive words!! ❤️❤️

Well I’m telling you that you can do it. And I’m in week 9. So I’ve done every single one of those runs - as did the people before me, they told me I could do it, and I watched them graduate and I believed them when they told me I could do it!

So just believe me ok?.

You already know you can do this run, you already said you finished wk3r3 with a bit left in the tank... that’s ideal. It is already working because that’s how you are supposed to feel.

If it’s too much of a struggle then either you’re too tired, maybe a little dehydrated, or maybe the gremlins were shouting a little louder today... the trick is to shout louder than the gremlins every day.

Spend a few minutes before you go out next time - maybe when you’re warming up or on your 5min Warm up walk and focus on what you’re about to do. Be clear about what your expectations are and go and achieve them.

Glad my posts help. I’ve said it before on here...

It isn’t always easy - but it is always worth it.

I’ll expect an update tomorrow from you please. 🤩

I’m far from epic. Really, I’m not even trying to be modest. I just want the best for people trying to improve themselves. There’s enough people out there that want to tear people down... I try to do the opposite and build people up!

Do me one favour, when you get to week 9, pick someone out from the earlier weeks and tell them what you’ve learned.

You are my horse... I’m betting on you! So saddle up- you’re in for a ride!
