Finding it hard

Started 2 years ago

Just before lockdown last March I was just about running 7k

Anyway as soon as we had that lovely weather I struggled to run in the heat so stopped running and enjoyed lazy days in the garden instead

Anyway put loads of weight on and need to get fit again so ive just gone out again and tried to run from the week 4. I am gutted to say I couldn’t even run for the first 3 minutes never mind the 5 min run so I ended up walking 5k instead.

It was my calves gosh how they ached. I am

so annoyed with myself all that hard work for nothing. Do you think it would be best if I started from week 1 again or try a few more walks and try from week 4 again.

Has this happened to anyone else and also any tips for running in the sun as I want to be able to do it this summer

Thanks

Drink plenty of water before you run, especially in warmer weather, you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to, I would advise you to repeat week 3 a few times before trying week 4.

Welcome back to the forum and well done on restarting.

Use it or lose it is the rule. You need to recondition your body to the impact of running, which at the same time will rebuild your resistance to injury. I would recommend starting back at W1R1, as in fact I have just done this morning, after a four month break.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Firstly well done for getting out there again, 👏🏻 try not to be too disappointed, cut yourself some slack you’ve not run for a long time, listen to your body and be patient.

As AlMorr says, step back to a week you feel comfortable with and go from there, build on that and you’ll soon get back into it again. In the Summer I go for early morning runs when it’s still cool, normally about 6am. Good Luck 👍🏃‍♀️
