W6R3. Dark Night of the Soul Update!

Hi, All. I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who responded to my Dark Night of the Soul post on Friday. I was utterly despondent and fed up, having completely bailed out of my W6 run 3 when I was only 7 minutes in.

Your advice was so good that I actually found myself looking forward to having another go. I still gave myself the weekend off, stepped onto the treadmill this evening, and while I can't say I enjoyed it (I always have - and I think I always will - found exercise pretty tedious) I used many of your suggested techniques and was able to let my mind wander while I chugged towards my 25 minute goal. And wouldn't you know it, I got there with energy to spare and was even able to have a bit of a sprint (if you interpret the word very loosely!) for the last minute.

So thanks again for the great advice and the wonderful support. Week 7 here I come!

Well done. You say you find exercise tedious.............if running meant doing it only on a treadmill, then my low boredom threshold would have stopped me at W3. Have you tried running outdoors, with a constantly changing sensory backdrop, sunshine and fresh air........ ..it beats tedium.

I have run outdoors in the past, but there are several reasons I've chosen to use the treadmill this time. Firstly, I'm a shocker when it comes to using bad weather as an excuse not to go out. Secondly, the road I live on is single-track, unlit and is used as a short cut by speeding cars - it's okay to use in the summer, but it does mean stopping and stepping into the ditch when a car comes along, which can be 5 or 6 times in a 30 minute run . And if I use bad weather as an excuse, I would seriously use having to drive somewhere to run as an excuse!

So I figured if I can get into a good routine using the treadmill, then going out for a run could be an occasional treat.

Although, I'll not lie - I find running outdoors pretty tedious as well 😆.
