First Outdoor run since W5

Gyms now closed so I braved the local running track. I previously had to stop road running as the pain in my left knee was excruciating. Anyway.... disaster this morning. Only managed 2k!!!! I’ve ran 1/2 hours comfortably on the treadmill at the gym. I wasn’t out of breath (any more than usual) my knee was great. I just found it so much harder. Do treadmills make an easy run? On the upside I’m really happy my knee was ok. The local track is spongy so I think that helped the impact. I’ll just keep going with it till I’m back up to a full half hour again. It’s always been my aim to run outside as soon as my knee allowed. Feel a bit glum about it, but I’ll keep persevering

I'm on a treadmill and have been from the start. I will be going outside eventually once I've built my confidence up. I have read other posts that it is different, however it won't take long to get used to it and back to what you'd achieved on the treadmill. As far as I'm concerned we are still moving, burning calories and getting fitter - better than being on the couch. I have another 3 x 30 consolidation runs to do then I'm going to decrease one of the run times and increase the incline to start the transition to outdoors.

Keep safe and well and keep persevering - just look how far you've already come. 👍👏👏😊

I’ll just keep plodding. You’re so right, we’ve come far.... moving, burning calories and getting fitter. My face will have to stop being like a backside and put on my big girl pants and get on with it. Good luck with the transition, keep me posted.

Well done! The running track will be easier on your knees. I run exclusively outside after starting cto5k on a treadmill because of arthritic knees. A year in and running mainly in trails (don't like road running much), my knees are mainly fine. Running may make them strong, but if they continue to niggle, it would be worth doing lots of knee strengthening exercises, they really do work!

That’s encouraging to know you’re managing fine with arthritis. I’m doing strengthening exercises, hopefully that will keep them strong

Yes, my arthritis has settled down a lot. During cto5k I had a few extra rest days here and there due to achey knees, but apart from the occasional blip, they're better than they've been for years! I think running is fine as long as we look after our knees well!

That’s good for me to hear. Mine is just really sore, not arthritis. I worry I’ll damage it, then I’ll be stuffed. I take extra rest days as a preventative measure and seems to be helping.

Well done, and keep going, whatever speed, distance your doing, slow is best, i've heard that on this forum once or twice 🤣 knee problems seems to be very common, wonder if it's an age thing, and do younger runners have knee problems. 🤔

Thank you! Age and muscles are probably rubbish as it was literally couch to 5K. Being 2 stones overweight won’t help. Jobs for now, knee strengthening and gob wiring! 😂

When I have my medical, I drive coaches, i'm classed as obese, for my height etc! 😂 I was losing more weight at the gym, swimming alot, but am enjoying the running now so much! 😀
