New runner here in my 50’s and I’m at R1W8 (never ever believed I would call myself a runner !!) I’m wondering what music other older runners download to run to? The radio 1 and bbc sounds downloads are ok but, for a change, I would like to find the best 70’s 80’s music to run to , any ideas?

Hi.

Recently I've been using spotify, the free version although you do need internet as it streams. 35-40 hours will use about 1GB of data on the lowest sound quality.

If I'm running in the forest it doesnt work for me because I can not get a internet connection but running in open space Its fine for me.

You can also search for example 70's music 150bpm

Thank you tips like looking for 150bpm are really helpful I didn’t know that was possible or what to search for so I’ll try that thanks!

I love my music and couldn’t run without it! I have an iPhone so basically listen to an artist and shuffle their albums. It’s normally Arcade Fire as most of their songs are fast, or Kings of Leon. Sometimes I listen to Amy Winehouse ‘Back to Black’ and I love Springsteen but a lot of his songs are slower. Some people on the forum suggested making your own playlist for the longer runs to spur you on so I bet that 80’s stuff you mentioned would sound fab!! Hope that helps! X

That does help thanks! Having some suggestions of what to search for ... turns out we share similar taste in music!

I know a few of us did 80s for week 8 and 90s for week 9 🤣, I like to change my music a lot or I get bored. Sometimes just a happy playlist on random on Spotify is enough, sometimes I make my own. Current top songs Mr Bluesky-ELO and Hooked on A Feeling - Bjorn Skifs, add them to any playlist for a guaranteed smile and a little boost in pace 💪🏻👍🏻😁

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

I just have my music collection on my phone.......everything from classic choral to heavy metal.......... that said, I generally run without music, just taking in the sounds of my environment. Less tech, more pleasure.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Thank you for the welcome and link to a advice , what a great forum this is. If anyone had told me I would take up running and be happy to be part of a running forum 6 months ago I would have told them to give their head a wobble!

How nice to hear someone else say they enjoy running without music and taking in the environment. 🌲🌳 This was one of my big incentives in the lighter days when I could run through the woods and felt that without sound was a bit safer too. I’ve loved the unexpected benefits of getting out in nature even more than usual. 😀

I've made myself a very eclectic playlist on Spotify - ranging from Abba to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Simon and Garfunkel to Soft Cell, Eurythmics, Dire Straits, the Proclaimers, the Bee Gees, the Eagles... Basically songs that I like that have a steady beat, not too fast, as I tend to run in rhythm with the music.

Brilliant suggestions thank you so much! I find my mind goes blank when I try to think of music I like to download . I love all these suggestions and will be singing along as I run ( probably in my head... not out loud!)

Haha - yes, I have been known to 'sing' along, and also do a few dance moves with my arms/shoulders as I run (if no-one's looking)!

I’m somewhat older than you.....

I start with Gloria Gaynor, I will survive!

I work on the principle that if I can dance for two hours, I can jog for 30 mins

Happy days x

Brilliant 😂 good suggestion thank you! Great name by the way and I will keep the dancing tip in mind - it’s true!

Ex 70’s rock chick/hippy here. Started off by finding a couple of old favourite albums on Spotify, and it now provides me with various 70’s rock mixes. I don’t mind the occasional advert as I listen to Planet Rock at home and the car 😊

I have my own spotify playlist, but instead of it being upbeat, tempo, musuc I find that I prefer really chilled out music to run to. So I don't run to a beat, but just listen to music while I trundle along! Depends what suits your mood really!

Look on Spotify. They have loads under the search facility for every decade. They also have c25k in the search. I just made my own playlist from there.

It seems I need to investigate Spotify! Thank you :)

Yeah. The best idea is stuff that you listen at home, the music you love. Nothing else. If tunes are not to your liking, the run will not be enjoyable. You don't listen to anything at home? Run without music. If you made me listen to something I dislike, I would locate the cliff and run towards it. And I wouldn't stop at the edge.

Running is a great chance to listen to the music I like best :)

I put all my CDs onto iTunes on the laptop and then created a Run Playlist with all the songs with a good beat in it. I have 75 songs on an iPod, totalling 5 and a half hours play time, which I shuffle play. There is never a song I don't like!

David Bowie, Abba, Adele, Deep Purple, Elton John, etc, most come up as Rock or R&B.

Favs: Blondie Atomic, Kate Bush Running up that Hill, Queen Don't Stop me now!, Elbow One Day like this, Michael Jackson Thriller, Beat it, The Black Eyed Peas I've got a Feelin
