I did it! C25K W9R9 completed

I may not have achieved the 5 k in 30 mins but I am very pleased to have run 2.65 miles in my last C25K run. I have actually run 35 mins on my Wk9 runs, so cheating a bit, but managed my furthest distance probably ever in my entire life: 3.07 miles in 35 mins. As I approach my 54th birthday I am more than happy with this achievement, especially considering I am naturally a sprinter and have always found distances very difficult.

I now aim to consolidate my 35 min runs. I have signed up to the Dementia UK 50 miles in November challenge. I will need to run at least 3.33 miles every other day to achieve this target. Most of us are affected by dementia in one way or another across our lives. This is for a really good cause and is perfect timing for me to consolidate my running.

Woohoo!

Congrats on completing the programme - you should be so proud of yourself! :) I'm hopefully doing my last run on 1 November and I am also doing the 50 mile dementia run with a friend for November so good luck with that!!

Good luck with your last run, so pleased to see that doing C25K has inspired people to get involved in running for charity, particularly Dementia 😊

Excellent! What great timing, too. Wishing you the very best fro completing C25K and the 50 mile challenge.

Congratulations! Amazing achievement 👏👏👏 I have one run left to complete the programme and was wondering what I could next.

Like you I am 54 next month and wanted to do something for Dementia Uk as a sadly lost my mam at the back end of February this year to this disease.

Love the idea of the 50 miles in November challenge 😊

Oh, go for it! There are lots of people doing it who haven't even run before, though I imagine they will be doing some walking, too. There's a lovely FB page of people doing the challenge. We are all inspiring and keeping ourselves motivated there.

HI Dups. How are you getting on with the 50 miles in November challenge? I have amazed myself by reaching 24.8 miles this morning since 1st Nov! My quads are complaining a bit, though!

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate in reply to CatsRun

That’s brilliant! You half way through and it’s only the 12 November! 👏👏 I have done 19 miles but hoping to be at 26 after Sunday, so half way. Are you doing every other day or are you doing longer runs? My quads aren’t great either. Getting up on a morning achey and sore.

I have been using my fit bit to track my running and it hasn’t been totally reliable. Did one run where it said over 6.31and another 5.65. The one where where it said 5.65 I had ran past my usual turning point because I felt I could a little further (I do exactly the same route each run) and it calculated less!

So my husband downloaded Strava on to my phone because he said it would be more accurate and reliable. So went out last night , pressed start and put it in my pocket. Last night was the furthest I had ran at my half way point so couldn’t wait to get back to see how far I had run and to see what my pace was😃 Disaster ! It only recorded 5 seconds 😩 I hate technology!

So I’m going to walk the route this morning to where I had ran last night to see how km I had done. I really can’t do a run today as my legs are sore but I really want to know exactly how far I ran. It is so frustrating.

So I need loads of stretching this morning with ibuprofen and paracetamol before I head out. It will seem strange walking instead of running 😂.

Will let know how I get on .

Hi Dups. You are doing really well, though I'm feeling for you with the poor working technology. I bought a Garmin Forerunner 45s after recommendations on here and it has been great. Totally reliable. I am running every other day. My shortest run is 3.5 miles and longest is 5.16 miles. The latter was a solid hour of running but it didn't fell like an hour at all. In fact, I could probably have squeezed a bit more out of my legs but as I know how painful the quads and calves can be I thought it best to stop at that point and cool down. I find that around 2 - 3 miles are the worst and then I get a sort of second wind and can just carry on. However, I do find the inclines unpleasant. The only thing that keeps me going on those is knowing that when I turn off into the next bit it's either flat or slightly down hill, so I can get some respite then.

I run at quite a slow pace (around 11.40 min mile on average), which I think is the real reason I can carry on and do longer runs. However, I realise I am asking a lot of my body right now so trying to take good care of it. Did I mention the foam roller? Only got that very recently and although often very painful to use as I have many triggers points on my gluts, quads and calves, I am convinced it is helping with the extra work I am asking these muscles to do.

Do keep me posted on how you are getting on. You are doing fantastic and raising money for a great cause :)

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate in reply to CatsRun

I decided today that was going to focus on doing longer runs instead of doing 3.5 mile runs. Have been doing around 6.30 average pace. Because I am competitive I have still been trying to achieve the 5k in 30 minutes. At this moment it is impossible! I am just causing more pain to my right quad. So I came to the conclusion that I would do longer runs at a much slower pace . That way I will achieve the miles and not injure myself as much. I need to run and enjoy jogging again .

So having read just read your post I am convinced that is the way to go.

I think we are both doing fantastic! Besides we definitely need to raise money for Dementia because I ran the other day with my tights on inside out😂

CatsRun profile image
CatsRunGraduate in reply to Dups

Oh, yes, def run slower. Allow your body time to adjust to the new demands on it. I did manage a sub-10 min/mile on a 5k before I started the Dementia UK challenge but injured my Achilles, so def go slow to avoid injury. God luck!

It’s decided, I’m doing it 😊

Woohooh! Good for you. You feel amazing doing this in memory of your Mam. She would be so proud of you :)

CatsRun profile image
CatsRunGraduate in reply to Dups

How are you getting on? Did the injury easy off enough to run yesterday (1st Nov)? I had given my Achilles 6 days of rest with self-massage and foam roller massage. I taped the Achilles and calf with KT tape and went out. Amazed myself by doing 4.52 miles! However, this was at a very slow pace and I took it easy on the leg. Hope you're doing ok again now.

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate

Hi Catsrun, 4.52 miles! Wow, that is amazing 😊 is your calf and Achilles ok?

I actually did do my first run since graduation yesterday, but didn’t get chance to post as I was at work till midnight last night. I rested up till then to make sure I was ok. I only completed 3.65 miles but it’s a start and was really pleased with myself. I’m hoping to do better as I get fitter.

Do you think the kinesio tape was helpful? I have got some as I work in emergency care and did training on it years ago, but our service hasn’t used it . Think it was too expensive.

It felt good getting back out there and running with a purpose.

Not many miles left to go 😂

I’ll keep you posted 😊

CatsRun profile image
CatsRunGraduate in reply to Dups

Well done for getting out there and going way above 5k! How did it feel? Yes, the tape definitely helped. Achilles is doing fine, surprisingly, today, though my ankle on the other leg has been complaining. I broke both ankles many years ago so really I need to use both legs evenly. Will be seeing Sports Therapist tomorrow so hoping for more advice and help then. Bit by bit we can crack this 50 mile challenge!

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate in reply to CatsRun

Well I think considering you have had two broken ankles , you are doing brilliantly!

Doing another run tomorrow, (although my quads are getting stiff and sore now as the day is going on) but I think it’s because I had 12 days off resting.

Loads of dynamic stretching tomorrow, hopefully doing the same as yesterday. I think if I can do that every other day I will be really pleased.

These will count as my consolidation runs😊

Enjoy your next run 🏃‍♀️😊

Hi Catsrun, are you nearly finished 50 mile challenge? I have 7 miles left to go. Resting up for 3 days as I have a hip bursitis and a quad pain.

Will be doing 3.5 miles on Thursday and 3.5 miles on Saturday. I will be so pleased when I have completed because what we are doing is such a worthwhile cause, but also to have a rest! My jogs are limping jogs😩

I will rest for a good week or so until all the injury pains have gone.

Been looking at JuJu plan to do 10k next. What will you do?

CatsRun profile image
CatsRunGraduate in reply to Dups

Hi Dups.

I did my first 10k on Sunday! Actually, 6.33 miles. And another 3.9 miles this morning brings my total to 47.16 miles. I had a 5 day break from Tues to Sun last week as my ankles and Achilles weren't good. Definitely do rest. You are so close. You will get there.

I need to look up, rather belatedly, how to train for 10k!

Best wishes

Beth

Where can I find Juju's plan? Thanks

Dups profile image
DupsGraduate

Wow! That’s amazing😃10k. The most I have done so far is 6.78k.

We are nearly there with this this challenge, 50 mile in a month, who would have thought that, and running for a great cause.

I joined the bridge to 10k community 2 days ago for advice and Roseabi sent the link of JuJu’s Magic plan. I would send the link but I am absolutely useless at technology.

The bridge to 10k community seem to offer different challenges along the way if you want to take part. Roseabi has invited runners to the challenge of the fastest km this month.

So sign in to that community and get the link sent.

Good luck

Anita

Thanks, Anita. I have found Juju's plan. Strange to start with 2.5k run given the distances I've been running, lol.

I completed the 50 miles in November Dementia UK yesterday! Are you there yet?

Well done👏👏👏👏, can you believe how far we have ran now! Starting with 90 second runs and now you running 10k non stop🤣

Will be doing the last 3.5 miles tomorrow. I will running into the hospital for my finish... the staff want to clap me in😱it won’t be a pretty sight 😂. Will have raised 605 pounds which I am so pleased with 😊

I can’t wait to do a quick 2.5 k run, it is strange though but I think it will freshen things up. Going to have a week off after tomorrow because I’m living on naproxen and paracetamol for my quad pain.

When will you start JuJu’s plan?

Best wishes

Hi Anita

Did you complete the 50 miles.. and in front of your colleagues, too! Well done, you!

I am running an extra 4 miles tomorrow (29/11) for the challenge, as I posted on my FB challenge page that fro every £10 extra donated I would run an extra mile :)

Juju's plan.. will probably start next week. You are right to have a rest. Your poor body has been through a lot, but I hope you are very proud of your achievement.

Best wishes

Beth

Yes I completed it😊. Everyone came out specially and a lovely surprise buffet was organised. I was overwhelmed and I’m afraid I cried! With two miles to go all could think of was my mam and why I was running. So it was quite emotional for me. I was both sad and happy.

So extra miles! I take my hat off to you. That great! I think we both can be proud of what we have achieved for the charity and proud on a personal level😊.

I will be starting week Monday on the JuJu plan so that’s eight days rest.

We can encourage and motivate each other on 💪😊

Best wishes

Anita

Congratulations! Fantastic achievement! Your Mam would be so proud, too :)

I did run the extra 4 miles and now other people have donated on my FB donation page! So, I'll either go out again tomorrow or will wait until 1st Dec in case I get even more donations. My big treat today was my son was hear for my birthday and came for the morning run with me. I haven't run at all with anyone yet and although he is much younger and faster than me it was so lovely having his company. I hadn't seen him for several months due to the restrictions so it was extra special :)

Are you on the Dementia UK FB challenge page? Just wondering if we can switch to Messenger to keep in touch. Will be good to hear how you get on with Juju. I have just ordered some Skins on Black Friday deal from SportsShoes.com so will have to keep running now, lol.

Enjoy your rest days. Your body will thank you for it.

Best wishes

Beth

Happy birthday 🥳🎂, how lovely that your son ran with you 😃 that will have definitely made your birthday really special. We both have November birthdays!

I think by the time people finish donating to your FB page , you will have ran 100mile😂 people are clearly really sympathetic to this charity.

I really do need to rest, I have had leg pain for weeks, so have took a lot of anti inflammatory medication and pain killers to get through the challenge. But that’s ok I got there, it was worth it.

I on not on FB, I’m a dinosaur! I’m not very good with technology, but I think I will ask my husband to set me up so we can stay in touch 😊

Best wishes

Anita
