Yes I know, not an encouraging comment but I realised last night running for 8mins (W5R2) that although I’ve got music blasting into my ears (well ok not blasting) and Laura doing her best to keep my spirits up there’s just not enough going on to interest me, is that weird?
It’s probably just me, you see I think I’ve got my pace steady (judging my my cadence over the last few runs), my breathing is better cos even after 8mins shuffling I’ve got my breath back in under 1min, I’m not bouncing like a gazelle so apart from putting one foot in front of the other and not tripping over I’ve got nothing gif my brain to do. So on Thursday I’m not going to listen to music (W5R3, The 20min Run. I’m nervous about it can you tell, I’m starting to babble), no I’m going to try The Infinite Monkey Cage, I listen when I’m driving long distances sometimes, I’ll let you know how the experiment pans out.
Question (I’m not expecting any answers here as most of you’ll have got bored by now):
Thursday is going to be my 1st rainy run, as someone who normally runs in jogging bottoms and polo shirt I obviously need to get kitted out for foul/cold weather running, so what’s best to wear any suggestions??

When you're actually running you'll get warmer. Synthetic shorts might be more comfortable than cotton joggers. Ditto for the top. You could wear a light raincoat but you're guaranteed to get sweaty under it.
If you have any synthetic fibre socks, wear them rather than cotton-based ones. You can see the theme here?
You're after fibres that don't hang on to the rainwater. If it's not windy the wetsuit effect will kick in as the water next to your skin warms up.
As nowster says go with sports fabrics that have good wicking properties - getting wet while running is surprisingly comfortable as long as you don't have soggy, heavy cotton rubbing and dragging. Good socks (two layer ones are great) are also important - for reasons I don't really understand, getting wet makes ordinary socks prone to cause blisters. A breathable waterproof is recommended come the winter but the challenge is to find one that doesn't get you wetter from sweat than you would have been from the rain!
There’s a decent running shop near by that I’ll go to but I needed valuable insights lik this so I don’t go and come away with loads of unnecessary gear do thank you.
Enjoyed your post and will try to answer last part first.( I'm female so not sure if this is relevant to you...) So far I've bought most of my running gear from M&S and think the quality is great as well as the look of it. I've got the shorts and the jogging bottoms and a few tops to mix and match. When I started the programme a few months ago now ( already? ) everything in my size was either sold out so just bought what was left! ( Never understood M&S ' running out of size 14 policy ) Sport trainer socks bought in Asda or Tesco and are fine though I think there are better ones out there.
Re the boredom - and it's not boring at all. I suffer the same problem. Hopefully it's not because I'm empty headed though some might argue😁 but I find the whole running process something to get through rather than enjoy. I am envious of those who love running and doubt if I'll ever be one of them!! However I keep going every alternate day. Some runs are better than others and its keeping me healthy during Covid as well as losing some much needed weight. I don't worry about it now like I did at the start
Thanks for your reply, it’s good to hear I’m not the only airhead on here!😁 I find the the part of running I really enjoy is finishing and the none run days.
It's not negative to acknowledge that some of us feel this way about running. It doesn't stop us so maybe we've also got the endurance factor! I do enjoy this forum though as it certainly motivates me to keep going and hopefully you too Maxi80
For sure. We can’t all be the Mr Motivator types initially. But I’m guessing the enjoyment comes a lot further down the line when you get over the coughing, spluttering and oxygen deficiency 😉
I'm glad you asked the question as I have just finished W4R2 in light rain. I wore synthetic sports socks which are great and lycra sports/gym leggings. It's the top that's tricky as I don't like to be cold so invariably wear too much. Today I wore an old gym top with full zip and a long sleeve running top underneath. The running top would probably have been enough on its own, though I would have started off cold🤨. As it was I alternated between too cold and too hot😁. The zip was useful as it was either open (too hot) or closed ( too cold)😂. Not sure this helps you, depends on your body temperatures. I think men tend to be hotter so wear less.
The one thing I don’t like (in a past life I think I may have been a cat) is being wet. It’s ok in a swimming pool or see situation but I bad weather, no especially my feel, I like my feet nice and dry please. I’m going to have to research this a bit but I’ve had some good advice here.
😂😂😂have you had a little drink? You replied to my post of this morning but you haven’t replied to my reply to your reply ..... yes I have and now I’m having another!😁👍
Just as well I lost it, I think I was rambling ( tired, not drunk😊) I was/am knackered due to very tiring 3 days at work then running tonight ( then making a token appearance at the gym with daughter). Run was tough, just as I thought I couldn't keep going Sarah said " only 60 secs to go, keep going ". So I did. Don't want to think about Friday run... I'll psyche myself out of it if I do.🙄
Ah beat you to that one I’ve already got it thanks, that and Nike Training Club, NTC has a pretty good Dynamic 7min Pre Run work out I’ve been doing this week. 👍
I went out in the rain today in capri leggings and a vest top. It was 12°, so I was pleasantly warm at the end of it. You only get wet once. I did once try a waterproof jacket, my top half was dryish, but my legs were wetter than ever.
Re the boredom, sorry I can't help. I use the running time to think about stuff 💭💭💭.
I didn’t understand 1st or 2nd time I read your message about your legs being wetter, I’ve got it now 😂😂. I’m not sure if the Capri pants will suit me but I’ll try anything once😁
I wonder if running without headphones might help? I noticed just post graduation that I didn't want or need the music, especially not upbeat music. I still occasionally listen to music, but on my long runs I switch it off. It might seem odd, but you might feel more in the zone running without it?
That’s an idea I hadn’t considered, thank you for that I might try that too, see what works best. Maybe if I don’t have the distraction of the music I could think about things clearly. 😃👏🏼👍
I haven’t read all the comments here so someone may have suggested but Decathlon do some great long sleeved sports tops and either shorts or running leggings - yes men can wear sports leggings in the winter and a few definitely do here 😊. They are good quality at great prices, I’d recommend taking a peek at the website.
As for being bored, I know what you mean.. at the moment I’m still enjoying being boosted by the music but have considered podcasts and audio books, which a friend listens to and loves it! Good luck..
