Sore Achilles: not a tear but what do I do?

On my second go I got through to running 30 minutes. Great and super whoopee for a few weeks but then had to stop due to heat, holiday and quarantine. I’m trying to build up but I’ve got an ache (no more than that) in my left Achilles’ tendon plus tight calf muscles. It’s not a rupture or tear. Any advice?

It's likely that it's your tight calves that are impacting on your Achilles. Have you got a foam roller? Really good for tight calves ( never roll your achilles! )

Hope it settles soon.🙂🤞

Thanks I’ll try the roller! It was fine until I stopped running for a few weeks.

Hi, I currently have achilles issues, I've been given strengthening exercises for my calves. I also had a tight calf muscle before starting the strengthening exercise, I believe it's quite a common symptom of achilles problems. Would it be possible to see a physio?

Thanks for your advice. I’ve never seen a physio, But an osteopath helped me sort out a knee issue. Think I’ll try out some calf exercises and monitor progress!

Hi from a Geordielad.

There are 3 calf muscles, so any could be giving you trouble, and yes they link to your Achilles tendon, which also could need attention.

I could tell you of some gentle stretches but they may not be appropriate in your case..

It would be better to see a physio and get a proper diagnosis.

I developed a similar problem over a year ago in my right leg, and still do one of the exercises nearly every day. Slowly recovered and have had no problems since.

For now just take your runs very easy unless the pain gets worse.😎

Thanks pet! I’m going to try some gentle stretching , I’ve had this before so I can dig out those exercises. If it doesn’t improve I’ll book in with a physio tho I don’t know if they are seeing people in the flesh so to speak .

You can only try. Hope you get it sorted.

Just did a 7km run this morn, and on 6km tripped and skidded along the ground. Dont know if slipped/tripped on dog poo or pigeon droppings (was under a bridge) but mainly got a bad scrape on my elbow. Luckily had a large patch at home instead of going to the walk-in. Continued my run to the end but annoying as it's the start of last year since my last fall/trip.

You cant keep golden oldies down.

😂😎

Sorry to hear it. I’ve managed to avoid any trips which is amazing given my lack of coordination and downright clumsiness. Hope the elbow heals quickly!
