Consolidation 15 - Long run - Weekly Virtual 5K

I decided it was time to try a new route! Hopeful that I might do 8K, I checked out a route I had in mind that previous local runners had done.

I left the house for my warmup walk - and realised it was cold! As I would be running slowly, I thought I’d better go back in and change. Swapped shorts for longer running tights, tee shirt for long sleeved top. Nope! Still cold. I’d had a brand new waterproof / windproof jacket delivered yesterday. It was so new, I didn’t want to wear it, but needs must! And rain was forecast.

So off I go. Beatles 🎵 through the headphones 🎧 and heading out of the village! It felt like an adventure running a completely new route! I’m running on the main road and there is a little traffic. Speeding! I have to jump into the verge a couple of times.

I turn into a single track road, which is very quiet. I’m just glancing at my watch to make sure I’m in the right zone, I don’t really need to look at anything else. My watch buzzes for 4K and I keep going, up ahead, I can hear a dog barking. I notice that it’s on a lead and as I get closer I realise that not only is it barking at me, but it obviously wants to kill me! The owner has pulled it to the side now and has it by the collar. I speed up to pass them and run on to a safe distance. My heart rate is through the roof and I have to walk slowly for a while to get back into Zone 3. That done, I turn out onto another main road and manage to keep in the right zone until the end of the the run. Santana 🎵 serenades me and I sing along in Spanish! 😀

Strava truncated the time slightly, my run was 1 hour 25 minutes and the 10% rule was applied 😊. Pleased to also have achieved 8K, who would have thought it?!!!

Awesome run! 👏👏👏

What else can I say?

Good job the dog was on a lead though...

Thanks - yes I was quite worried! I soon forgot about it with the excitement of my new route 😊

I was charged by a big black Labrador a couple of weeks ago on the sports ground. The owner was nowhere to be seen. It took one of my legs from under me and how I managed to stay upright I've no idea. It turned out it wasn't going for me though, but a little yappy handbag dog on the other side of the playing field. Phew!

What a great run Jools 😬👏👏👏

I noticed how much cooler it was on Thursdays run !

Hope you managed to not overheat in the jacket though ?

Looks like you have some nice Running routes around there !

But it's a bit worrying when the dogs are straining on the leash to get at you !

I decided on 2 rest days as my calves were a little stiff at the end of Thursdays run ,

Well done with the 8k, it made me smile as that's my (loose) plan fi tomorrow 😁

Jacket was perfect as I wasn’t running fast! Hope it goes well tomorrow 👍

I need to get a jacket for running in the rain but have no idea what I should buy!? What type is yours?

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply to Moomin63

Mine is an Asics Accelerate Waterproof Jacket for runners. I bought it from SportsShoes.com. It’s very lightweight and is quite a snug fit. You have to wear a long sleeved top under it.

Although if the 'Fun Police' are watching , even I can work out that 8.5k would be within a 10% increase of my last weekly distance 😁

Impressive as ever!

It really WAS cold this morning, wasn't it? Bring back summer!

Yes, I don’t think I’ve worn long sleeves since I started the programme - and definitely not a jacket because I didn’t have one!

Well done!! You are doing so.well.

Sorry about the dog 🐕 that wanted to kill you! What is it with dogs and runners? They can be quite a scary encounter... I have crossed the road many times to avoid them. I think they feel threatened, but don't know why?

Well done on your 8K!! It's an incredible achievement.

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply to Plattszo

Aaw, thanks Zoe! Dogs certainly don’t like runners, I think it must be the movement towards them

Plattszo profile image
PlattszoGraduate in reply to Jools2020

I was once running slowly behind 3 dogs on a lead. I was approaching at my usual pace and they kept turning around to see where I was... they were casually walking along, but they just have felt unsure about me... always best avoided!! 😆

Definitely!

Strange! I've not had any trouble with dogs... yet.

I've had them rush to garden fences to greet me and have had to apologise to them, "Sorry, can't stop."

Maybe the dogs round here are more used to seeing runners?

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply to nowster

Maybe! In any case, I wasn’t going to hang about apologising to that dog 😬

Well done on the 8km. You're doing amazing things.

I'm going to be taking it easy for a few days before starting consolidation. I overdid it on Friday.

Going great Julia!.. well done! Glad the dog was on a lead too..... some just don't like runners do they!

Loving the music choices Beatles and Santana!... I love mixing up the music when i run!....

:-) x

Waterproof sounds good too - I've noticed its getting a little cooler too on my runs ... and i don't run at the times you do... probably even cooler then

Thanks, Jane 😊

I like mixing up the music, too. Have to say that most of the time I run to Pink Floyd.

It certainly was chilly when I did my run! And because I was running slowly I knew I needed a bit more warmth. Kept the jacket on! 🙂x

Great run!! Well done 👍🏽 👏 I got charged by boy on a bike today! He made no attempt to go round me - I had to jump out of the way! Not a nice feeling. I think a dog would have freaked me out a bit!

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply to Moomin63

Thanks!

Some people are so inconsiderate ☹️

The dog certainly freaked me out, but once I got my heart rate down I enjoyed the rest of the run.

Wow look at you go, What a great run .

just going out today for my first consolidation run. Not going to try to do anything other than 30 minutes. Once again using the advice posted here.

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply to Lindacarole

Thank you! 😊 I think that’s the best plan - just get used to running for 30 minutes. You could vary it by trying new routes! That makes a huge difference! After a few weeks, if you want something more, you could try JuJu’s Magic Plan, which either increases your distance in a controlled way, or the time you spared running.

That's fantastic! 🙆‍♀️👏🎊Love how you brought the whole thing to life too! 🐕🏃‍♀️

Thank you 😀. It’s funny, I started writing up my runs waaay back in about Week 3 because someone asked me to. It’s now part of my routine when I get back home!

Decided against Magic plan. I’ve already smashed the time target, and I’ll stick to my own plan for increasing distance, when I’ve decided what it is 😂
