Week 6 Run 3 Massive Struggle!

Sparkleandsprint profile image

I don’t know why but today was a massive struggle. Not sure if it was because of the heat or the fact I’m just tired but anyway, I had to stop after 24 minutes and sit at the side of the curb until I regained my breath.

It’s odd because i’ve ran 20 minutes before without it being that much of a struggle. Perhaps it was an off day, either way I made myself do the last remaining 60 seconds once I’d had a rest.

I feel slightly disappointed/confused that I’ve made it this far and never once had to stop but at the same time, I’m doing my best and some days are easier than others.

It'll be that humidity. I've never ran before..and by no means an expert...but my...I ran my W9 R3 on Tuesday and felt I was in wallpaper paste. Dust yourself down..carry on regardless💪🤸‍♀️

I also ran my w9 run 3 yesterday and it was really hard. There was not a breath in the air and was so hot, I really struggled. Every run is different and we all go at our own pace. So upwards and onwards

Some runs are easier than others, you were wise on taking a break, probably due to the heat, have a extra day off running, drink plenty of water the day before you rerun run 3 of week 6 and run it a little slower than you did today, good luck. 👍

Everything going on in our lives can impact on our performance as a runner. Restedness, hydration and nutrition are at the top of my list of variables that need to be optimised to enable enjoyable running.

24 out of 25 minutes is still an amazing effort, don’t knock yourself! I have this run coming up at the weekend. I have also been struggling since the weather has changed, we just have to keep persevering!

You’re doing a great job :)

I think you should be really proud of your 24 minute run, although I can understand exactly the disappointment you feel.

There can be a number of reasons why you felt like this, tiredness and weather conditions are very likely to have contributed.

Be gentle with yourself, you are doing amazingly well, I promise you. I look forward to being able to run 24 minutes. Be proud. 👍👍

2 rest days works absolute wonders for me sometimes, and try a different time of day. First thing in the morning I tend to feel less sluggish. Like you said though you know you can do it, I do think the humidity is making things a LOT harder too. It's like running in a tumble dryer!

24 minutes is fantastic. Think back to week 1, could you have even run four minutes let alone twenty four? Sometimes it is just not right on the day, have a couple of days rest and then try it again - you’ll do it.

The worst thing about a bad run for me is that it makes me anxious that the next one will be bad too. That's never happened so just try not to worry and do it, you'll feel brilliant afterwards. And you're probably right about the heat, I find it affects my runs more than anything else, including how tired I am and how many rest days I've had.

Running in the humidity is horrible! I had an awful run 2 of week 6 as it was on a very hot/humid day and was so scared that I wouldn't be able to do run 3 but yesterday it was so much cooler, the rain started and it was great and it was a completely different experience. The weather plays a huge part.

Also 24 minutes is a great achievement!!!

Well done on your achievements. Be kind to yourself. No big deal you had to take a break at 24 mins and well done on continuing 60 seconds. Big pat on the back. Keep on running. Best wishes

You did amazingly well to run that amount. I’ve noticed that I get hung up on the exact time/distance etc I should do but when you think about it, what’s a minute? You got out there, in heat and despite tiredness and ran all that way! Massive achievement! I’ve just read ‘Jog On’ by Bella Mackie and she convinced me to relax a bit about targets and not beat myself up but to be proud of every run. It’s a great read. I’m waffling (sorry!) but what I also wanted to say was that for some reason, I find every third run really hard. I have done throughout the app and even though I’ve graduated, I still do. Then the next run is often lots better. Keep going - you’re doing so so well. 😊

24 mins still a good run! But I understand you're disappointed. Agree with everything said, some days are just harder and not as good as others. Don't t be disheartened. Rest up and then get back out there! Xx

I've had a couple of runs where I've just not been feeling it. Sometimes I stopped and walked the remainder others I walked then restarted. I understand your disappointment as I felt the same but tried to view it as a training session and then tried again on the next run. Try not to be too hard on yourself, you're doing great!

On Tuesday instead of doing a consolidation run we decided to do our first walk out in the hills since lock down. Due to parking restrictions we couldn't get to our usual spot so had to quickly think of a different walk to do. We set off on a walk we have done a few times(although hadn't walked like this for ages) but the humidity soon started to make it hard going and we were extremely hot and sweaty, not very pleasant. We had also forgotten quite how long the walk was; we did between 11.5 - 13 miles(smart watch and mobile gave different results) and to say I was knacked by the time we got back to the car would be an understatement. We have done this walk before and many others of this length and have rarely felt the way we did on Tuesday and so can only put this down to the humidity which was dreadful.

Pinkyoga you did the right thing to take a break before completing the final 60 minutes. I did much the same thing on a week 7 run, when i needed to walk for 2 minutes during the continuous run element and I then added the 2 minutes on at the end. You're doing just great so instead of being confused or disappointed give yourself a huge pat on the back for having achieved so much so far. After my experience on Tuesday I'm sure the humidity certainly has an impact on how your sessions go, so put it out of your mind and enjoy your next run, good luck.

Glad to hear it’s not just me! I noticed I didn’t see any other runners about as I usually do, which made me wonder what I was doing! Haha. Definitely too hot. Thank you so much for your kind words x

Don’t give yourself a hard time. You’re amazing! Just an off day. Some days you make a gorgeous brew some days it tastes like dish water. Tomorrow is another day. You’ve got this. I repeat, you’re amazing

Totally agree with everything that's been said, and would just add this, we have to change the language somewhere along the line!! I'm the WORST for this- oh I failed, I didn't complete it, I let myself down... it's really silly. We have to start thinking- I am an intelligent, rational adult, I listened to my body, my body was telling me that it was struggling in the heat, so I decided to stop for a little while to give myself a break. My last run was like this, I wrote a massive post about it, and I think the language is important for me because so much of my association with exercise is negativity and about disappointment and failure when actually I'm doing really well! We know the difference between our bodies hurting and our minds telling us to stop- we've got this!

Anyway not to project my issues!! You are doing brilliantly.... :-) Keep going!! xxx

Sparkleandsprint profile image
Sparkleandsprint in reply to SingsAndRuns

Your not projecting your issues at all, it’s nice to know I’m not alone! I fully agree with this. My inner dialogue is not very kind a LOT of the time. However I am struggling with a few things that contributes to this.

I’ve tried my best to switch it off during this programme, i.e not being concerned about how fast I’m going etc and instead appreciating how I’m getting out there and giving it a go! Similar with the number on the scales, I’m trying to just ignore it. Those things aren’t necessarily important at this stage. Sometimes we are our own worst critic.

SingsAndRuns profile image
SingsAndRunsGraduate in reply to Sparkleandsprint

Very true!! This forum has been so helpful for that, loads of tips like if someone runs past you going really fast you can think oh well they're probably not running as far!!! Although when he ran past me for the second time round the lake the other day I couldn't really say that ha ha! But that has really helped, not comparing what I'm doing/ look like/ speed to anyone else.

Good luck to you, I hope the next run is a belter. I'm changing my scenery in the hope of a boost :-) xx
