Week 3 Run 1

Well after finally starting this a few months ago and getting to Week 2 run 2 on the treadmill (legs can't cope with road running) they shut all the ruddy gyms! Decided to have a go round and round the garden. I find it much harder but have kept at it and managed to complete Week 3 Run 1 today after work. So hard and not confident on how much further I can go but very proud of today's achievement.

Fair play to you for adapting to the change and completing your first W3 run. You are absolutely right to be proud of today's achievement! An unexpected change in your exercise plan can really disrupt things so the fact that you got out there and did it is commendable. Just keep taking it 1 run at a time and see how you get on 😃

Hi Shellygall,

Fantastic that you have completed week 3! 👍 I’m also at that stage, having never run before. I’m 52 and fairly fit but found Week 3 so hard. I was thinking there is no way I can do Week 4 but my daughter persuaded me to have a go,nothing to lose etc, (we started C25K together) and I thought I would give it a try, on the basis of: if I can’t do it I’ll repeat week 3. I was so surprised; I managed to do it! However, on W4R2, I didn’t stretch enough before my run and ended up straining a calf muscle which I am very frustrated about because I was only just starting to (almost) enjoy it!

Things I have learnt are: ensure you do plenty of stretches before and after (I even had to google this because I had no idea how to do stretches!); and warm up properly (ie make sure that walk is VERY brisk); and make sure you keep the pace very very slow for the first couple of intervals to allow your body (including lungs) time to adjust.

Don’t feel embarrassed to run outside- there are loads of new runners and walkers out there now, using lockdown as an opportunity to do something about their fitness. They’re are less people and cars around and it’s a good time to start running outside. I tell myself that I may look like I’m struggling to run (I look in pain most of the time!!! 🤣) and I’m barely going faster than a fast walk, but it doesn’t matter because I’m obviously new to running and people will think : good for her having a go. That’s what I always think when I see someone like me. It’s admirable and inspires others to also get off their couches and improve their health. Well done for keeping at it even though the gyms shut; that really shows you have the motivation which will mean you will succeed at this. 😊

If you can run around your garden, you can DEFINITELY run on the road! Your legs may need a little time to adjust and you may even need to repeat a run or two but it will be so worth it. Running outside in nature, especially at the moment when everything is so quiet and you can hear the birds so clearly, the air is clear and even now that it’s raining, it’s just such a pleasure to be outside.

You have shown real resolve and determination to start up again, you should be very proud of yourself - keep going!

Well done! You've inspired me to maybe keep at it. I'm going to need to repeat from week 2 before moving on.

Good for you...
