A πŸ’© day made better by love and running

Today I should have been mother of the groom to my son and his beautiful partner. Obviously, it hasn't happened, but we've supported each other with messages, photos and love.

I went out at lunchtime with something to prove and ran my longest distance ever - 14.26k. Last September I couldn't run for one minute, now I'm wondering whether a half marathon is out of the question. I'm almost 60, under 5" tall and not in the least bit 'athletic'. If I can get to this point, so can anybody. All you need is tenacity, patience and love.

Stay safe everybody. Xx

Wow - that is amazing Speedy60 - I'm looking for inspiration for my lost mojo... having graduated nearly a year ago.... your distance in only 6 months is very inspiring! thank you.

So is the wedding postponed or was it such that you simply couldn't attend?

The wedding has been postponed until October. 🀞

I set out to run 13k, beating my previous distance of 12.7k and kinda surprised myself.

Set yourself a goal is my best advice. It was my brain, not my body, that got me round; that's definitely where I need to put the work in.

An amazing run on a πŸ’© day how sad they couldn’t have had the wedding they planned, that has happened to a friend of mine too and it’s making her mad and angry

Keep running, keep smiling and stay safe

I think we've been through all the emotions over the last few weeks, but today was guided by my beautiful, generous future daughter in law. I decided that if she could manage the day with such grace, I'd better just shape up!

Thank you for your good wishes. You stay safe too. X

It doesn’t change the love they have for each other missing this day which will happen one day in the future x

Oh, what a day of strange emotions for you. I hope that your son and his partner are able to celebrate their special day with you very soon. I'm glad that your run provided you with some direction for today - what a wonderful achievement and a reflection of the amazing progress you have made in so short a space of time. Well done πŸ€—

So sad about your son's wedding Speedy - the celebration will feel all the more special when it happens (if that is even possible with a wedding!πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ)

Great run too and no of course a HM is not out of the question! There have been lots much older than you, who have gone on to run their first HM! I was a spring chicken of just 52 πŸ˜‰ when I ran my first a few years back! Make it a goal - make it happen! πŸ™‚πŸŒˆ

Thank you for your encouragement. Yesterday was a bit of a revelation. I got home thinking, 'oh, so that's how you do it.'

I've come this far with no major injuries and I think I'll keep plodding on until after lockdown and probably for the rest of the year and just see how it goes.

Sorry about the wedding being cancelled but congratulations on the run, you ran almost 9 miles, have a good rest and perhaps the next run you could run 16K, 10 miles, you could tell the administrators that you have ran 10 miles, you would then have the word 10 miles next to your username.

Thanks. I've never thought of myself as being particularly driven or competitive; I just seem to keep surprising myself. ☺

Hiya lovely. First, I'm sure that when your son does get married, it will be even more special 😊

Thank you for your inspirational story. I'm trying my hardest to stay fit during this difficult time. I'm slowly building my strength by cycling and pilates in the hope that one day, I will run that 5K and maybe even more!πŸ€”

Stay strong honey and enjoy this fab weather 🌞πŸ’ͺ

Our son brought their wedding forward just before the lockdown and we had a small, rather improvised immediate family wedding.

What they didn't reckon on, in sickness and health, was going down with Covid-19, presumably caught in his first week back at NHS work, 4 weeks to the day after the wedding! He's got away lightly. His new wife is still unwell, although it looks hopeful that she will be ok.

The emotions and the restrictions have played havoc with my running. I seem to be losing my running legs!

Oh, how awful. Best wishes and prayers to your family. Please thank your son for everything he is doing for the rest of us. πŸ™

So much ❀️ to your son and his wife..also to you.

Your legs will stay. Make the most of the fab weather and get out for an early walk. Take time to appreciate what you have. 🌞🌈

I am sorry that the wedding has had to be postponed, so much disruption for so many at the moment but love will carry us through.

Well done on your run! On the Marathon Running and Race support forum, there is a 10 mile badge up for grabs. That's 16k, so you are nearly there. How about that as a first goal and then it's only a parkrun to the HM. :)

Absolutely awesome πŸ™Œ. Such a great achievement in 6 months. These are trying times but you are coping with grace and stoicism. It's all we can do. I really can't own the word 'grace' though. On Friday I was stuffing banana and chocolate chip cake while lamenting my sorrows; not a good look. 😳

Sounds like your son will be marrying a wonderful woman and you'll be gaining a lovely daughter. It will happen and will be an even more special day if that's possible.

I'm 60 in June and at W4 of the C25K, your achievements are inspirational. Gives me hope that I'm not too old for this running lark πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘

Thank you. I have three sons and this is the second one to make a first class choice of life partner, so I am feeling blessed indeed.

As far as running goes, I truly hope I can be an inspiration to you. Honestly, I started last September with the goal of running 5k by my 60th birthday - also in June. Now I seem to be channelling my inner Forest Gump!

I don't want to make it sound easy, it takes determination and bloodymindedness as much as physical fitness, but the benefits are worth it. I just love that my body will still respond to my brain, even as I become grey and wrinkly - don't let them write us off yet! πŸ‘ŠπŸ§“πŸ‘΅

Well done on your run! These young people are so philosophical about things aren't they? It can't happen so they just change their plans and deal with it. Admirable. My son has postponed too!

I've found your post and replies inspiring as I'm a little older than you (just a little) and sometimes wonder if I can and you've told me how I can.

Ah, thank you so much! If I can inspire just one other person, it's worth it.

I started c25k determined not to be defined by my age. I think what we may have lost in physical fitness, you and I, we can make up for with a lifetime's experience and resilience.

Best wishes to your son. There are going to be some fantastic parties when this crazy time is over.

What an inspiring post! Firstly, the emotional journey of just the last week must have been immense. Many of us might have sat under a thunder cloud eating pastry for an entire week dealing with such a momentous change of important plans! But you didn’t. You decided to get out there and do it - and look what you did! I’m so encouraged by you!

I’m at the start of my journey - w2R2 today and I’m just 55, 5’ tall, overweight and unfit just about able to run 90 seconds! I’m a bit concerned about my knees but I want to be able to do this. So thank you for sharing.

I hope, when October comes and the big day arrives, you’ll feel a sense of journey that was shared with your family and can rejoice deeply as you cross the β€˜finish post’! There will be such deep joy then! I m getting excited for you!

All the best to you and your family. X

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate in reply to Twinklestarr

Me, eating pastries for the entire week - never! πŸ€₯

Seriously, we all have bad days, I certainly do. It's how we come back from them that counts. I couldn't have done the running without the love.

Please keep up the running, it has so many health and wellbeing benefits. Take it slowly, look up Japanese slow running on YouTube, it helped many of us through c25k. Also check out some knee strengthening exercises. All the evidence shows that runners actually have fewer knee problems than non runners, so that should encourage you.

And thank you for the kind words - star by name and star by nature.🌟
