That was me in September!

Not that long ago I was posting asking about sore hips, doubting I could do wk5 run3, worrying about what the neighbours would think. Now look wot I done - my first 10k! I am posting because I'm chuffed with myself, but also to say, truly, if I can do it, anyone can.

Congratulations Speedy60, it truly is amazing how our running journeys all start from wk1r1 of c25k.

Just shows what you can achieve if you really want it.

I wish I'd lost weight! I think I'm eating more as I eat after running (breakfast or lunch) and think, 'Ooooh, I can have this extra piece of toast!'.

Brilliant news on the 10k(s)- and you are pretty speedy too. πŸ€—πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ₯³

Thank you Speedy60. I left my job as a primary school business manager in December because of the workload and started C25K in January because I wanted to create something positive out of a sorry situation. I’ve got to Week 6 run 2 and for the first time have missed a couple of days due to achey hips and horrible weather. I’d always been worried about missing a run in case I lost my mojo but your post will propel me out again tomorrow, 2 days later than on plan but your words make me feel see the bigger picture. I really hope I can do the same. Huge well done to you, your positivity has transformed what could have been a difficult period in your life. I am full of admiration for you x

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate in reply to Sewnotfit

Schools are very stressful places, which is a shame because when you can actually get on with your job, it's the best job in the world. I'm sure you've made the right decision for you. X

I'm really glad my post has got you out there again. It doesn't matter if you miss the odd day. I once missed a week in the programme when I went on holiday. What matters is having the tendency to get back out there. It can require a dose of the bloodyminded! But, if you can do it in this weather, the rest of the year should be a doddle!

Regarding the hip pain, that nearly finished my running before it had really begun. Make sure you've got your posture right. Run up tall as though your being pulled up by your ears. Keep your bum tucked under your body and take small strides, no reaching out in front to 'grab' the road. Try not to sink into the hips, especially when you're tired or running uphill.

I'm a keen swimmer and that really helps on rest days. I also tried some yoga for the hips. It does work, but I haven't kept it up. I found the child's pose particularly helpful for releasing tension in my lower back. Try yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. There are also lots of core body exercises out there too that help. It's really a question of building up strength slowly.

I'm absolutely certain you can do this. The benefits are enormous if you can work through the early stages. At first I found that my head was pushing my legs round. After a while, it was my legs pushing my brain round. Now I seem to have reached a happy place where it all just works together. My body has changed shape, the graph of my resting heart rate looks like a ski slope, but the biggest improvement has been in my mood. I really believe it can work for almost anyone.

Happy running to you. Let us all know how your run goes. πŸ˜ƒ

HI Speedy 60

Thanks again for your help and support. I got out there this morning and did Week 6 Run 2. I was really worried abut not running since Friday as so far I have stuck rigidly to every other day, but it felt no different! I do Pilates once a week and am trying to drink more but will seek out the online help too.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for your kind and thoughtful words, and for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. I felt like I was at the 'legs pushing head round' stage today but I am sure it will all come good. If I've learnt one thing, it's not to overthink it and to take each run as it comes without passing judgement beforehand!

I look forward to hearing you've entered the London Marathon ;-)

Speedy60Graduate in reply to Sewnotfit

You're very welcome, I'm glad it helped. X

You'll be waiting a long time to see me run a marathon! I'm really not who you'd think of when you think of a runner and I like the idea of 10k.

Leosmit profile image

I get out when I can, usually twice a week, three times if hubby here. Hit the 5k/6k mark most runs so I am chuffed with that. Still don’t feel confident as a runner so just sticking with what I’m doing in the meantime.
