1st Consolidation Run

Up and out this morning to do my first consolidation run. I’d partly convinced myself that I wouldn’t be able to do it without the programme but quickly gave myself a good talking to 😂

I downloaded the Nike Run app and thought I’d do one of their ‘morning run with headspace’ runs. It’s recorded that I ran for 30 mins but nothing else. I’m wondering if this is because I was on the treadmill? Technology and me are not the closest of friends 🤦‍♀️

Anyway I’m pleased to report that I did indeed run for another 30 minutes and my Fitbit tells me that I covered just under 4K. I’m not bothered about distance at this stage, just saying as an encouragement to those starting out who may feel they’ve got to push for 5k by the end of the programme.

My next dilemma is whether to venture outside or to consolidate on the treadmill first. I know lots of you prefer outdoors and on days like this I can see the attraction. I also fear that the treadmill might become my security blanket. Thinking I might try the great outdoors on Saturday morning and see how far I get. Any thoughts?

Hi Redvic definitely venture outside for a run I did all my c25k on the treadmill and only recently started going outside. It’s a little different but I much prefer outdoor running now. Good luck

I absolutely love running outside, especially in the spring/fall and especially if you have a nice park or body of water near you! I'm doing Ct5K on the treadmill just because I prefer knowing that my pace is exactly consistent from run to run and the only thing that I'm changing throughout the program is the time spent running; but once I move into the consolidation phase I'm planning to switch to running outside just because I find myself so much happier and more motivated when I do. I'd definitely recommend giving outdoor running a try!

Running outdoors is what I do it for. You might find yourself disappointed on your first run or two because I think it's physically a bit harder than the treadmill. On the plus side, it's soon much more fun!

Make sure you have decent running soles, even if it's not icy, it's easy to slip on wet leaves etc. And make sure you don't over dress. Dress for one mile in, not how you feel when you leave the house. I still haven't got that bit right!

Great that you are consolidating. Even though I’m in the depths of winter in the Scottish Highlands I’d rather put on layers than hit the treadmill. For your first outside run think of a nice place to go and run for the pleasure of running rather than speed or distance. Good luck

yes! do it.... the world is a wonderful place to explore, and exercise is best done there for all the extra benefits ( that is my personal view, I am not a fan of treadmills but I know they are great for so many people)

Great consolidation run . Try outside it just takes a bit of getting used to. The treadmill keeps your pace just now then it's up to you running outside. Just keep it slow and slower again. Good luck and let us know how you get on 🤞🤞

I only run outside because I haven’t got access to a treadmill. But as you do both, I think I’d run outside if the weathers ok, and on the treadmill if it’s not 😁 Well done on the run btw!

That's great! Am also about to start consolidation runs. So the treadmill - well I started the programme on the treadmill and moved outside around week4/5. The treadmill does become a bitvif a safe space!

I suppose if you want to end up as a mainly outdoor runner you could think about venturing outside. It does feel different because you feel as though you're running faster on the treadmill, but if you focus on the air and the changing environment that can help you adapt I think.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your lovely replies. I’ll give it a go outside on Saturday and see how it goes. We have a canal near us but I’ll give it a miss at the moment as the path is so muddy and it’s hard work walking on it never mind running. I’ll let you know how I get on 😁

Wow you really are talking like a pro runner. Did you do 2x 30 minute run then? Or did I misunderstand that bit?

Just showing off now. I’m three runs off graduating and plan to hit the pavements afterwards. Everyone seems to say it’s better running outside.

Only one lot of 30 minutes 😊 . I’m puzzled as to why the Nike app didn’t record distance etc but assume it’s because I was on the treadmill.

I’m waiting for your posts (no pressure 😂) and cheering you on all the way. Looking forward to being able to congratulate on you graduation. Keep going you’re so close 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Absolutely get yourself outside 🙂.

There is absolutely no pressure on you to complete a specific time or distance. You've graduated now. You are you're own boss 🤣.

Give it go. Go slow. Expect it to feel a little tougher. Aim for 20 minutes and if you still feel good, keep on going :-)

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Mig. I think it’s all about confidence and not wanting to f*** 🙄 I’ve often started things and then not kept them up. Deep down I know it’s not going to be the same and I have to take my own advice that any run is better than none and it’s never a f*** but a practice run. I’ll let you know how I get on. Hope you’re getting on ok.

Doing ok. Still trying to get to grips with which route I prefer. Trying to understand why one run feels so much harder than another. But I guess that's what consolidation is all about isnt it! Onwards to 10k soon though. No rest for the wicked 🤣
