Shin splints?

Hi

I just did my W6R2 today.

On finishing R1, the area under my left ankle was aching a bit. The pain continues now post R2.

Am I experiencing shin splints?

I run on a hard surface with plain trainers. When I say I run, I actually jog slow at walking speed. Covered 2.5km in the 20min run today

I have been resting atleast one day between runs.

I do not want to pause having come this far and determined to graduate of C25K this winter

Hi there, possibly not, you say the pain is under your ankle....? Your shin is the front of your lower leg between your ankle and knee....you can indeed get aching pain here going up the shin,(shin splints) which is an over use injury - I,e too much too soon and from running on hard surfaces.

If the pain is under your ankle it could be foot or heel.....

Perhaps an extra rest day would help as you’re now running for longer. Maybe get it checked out if it continues....

Sorry to hear you have aches. Shin splints are usually referred to as pain in the shin bone - between knee and ankle, rather the ankle itself. Are you stretching properly after each run? Can you mix up some soft surface running with your hard surfaces. you may want to think about going for gait analysis to see if this is causing the problem. The wrong shoes can effect ankle, knee and hip joints as you move to longer runs

No, I do not stretch post my run. Are there any specific stretches I need to perform?

Hi. Not shin splits. Most likely plantar fascia pain. I get this from time to time. Rest will make it better, maybe check your shoes too, an insole might help. Your local running shop would be where to go IMO.

If it’s very painful, and it maybe painful the next morning when you get out of bed, or walk down the stairs. You do need to rest otherwise it will get worse.

Listen to your feet.

Good luck

Just saw the bit about your shoes. You’ll need proper running shoes from a running shop. What you’re experiencing is damage due to hard surface running and not using proper shoes. Get new shores and run in grass during your run. But rest too.

Thanks. Are these fitted shoes expensive? 🙄

I got a pain like that and it was down to shoes. I went to runners world and they watched me running to see what I did, then recommended stability shoes. I got a pair (they checked me running in those first before I bought them). Been fine ever since!

So it could be shoes, but as Madge and Granny say, try an extra rest day, look up some strengthening exercises, make sure you stretch afterwards. Oh, and a pair of compression running socks will help too. (I have some by Cep, about £10- £15 a pair).

It doesn't sound like shin splints.

Have you read the guide to the plan? healthunlocked.com/couchto5... which includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run and dealing with injury as well as many other topics.

Take care.
