Not how I wanted to spend my wedding anniversary but touched by the kindness of strangers

Things you wish you hadn't done. I thought I would just squeeze in a quick run before anniversary breakfast with my husband. My trusty running companion and talisman, my dog, wasn't with me as she has been on holiday over the weekend because we were away.

It was going so well until I didn't see the curb around a tree because of a carpet of very pretty yellow leaves. I went over on my ankle and sprawled forward, flat on my face. Hubbie had to come and get me because I couldn't walk. Fortunately, I wasn't in the middle of the woods. As I waited, a very kind man came and sat with me on the curb. He even gave me his water bottle. The kindness of strangers is a wonderful thing.

I'm now lying on the sofa with a packet of peas wrapped round my ankle. Ribs hurt a bit too and my hand is a bit of a bloody mess. Off to the doctor this afternoon and hoping it's just a bad sprain.

You'll be proud of me though. As my ankle expanded, the first thing I did was take off my shoe because the worse thing I could imagine was having my Asics ruined if it had to be cut off.

My main concern now is how long I'll be on the injury couch. I was planning to start JuJu's Magic Plan when the next session begins. Poo!

Oh no Puppy-love 😪 So sorry to hear you've had a fall. It's such a shock to the system.

I hope you recover very quickly!

Happy Anniversary 💐❤️

Thank you, Ali. I was very shaken but, even with my head between my knees sitting on the curb, the thing that worried me most was how long it'll take before I can run! Just praying it's not broken. I have mild osteoporosis - one of the reasons I started running - and I do worry about breaks. But I'm a great believer in Monty Python's advice to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Morning Puppy-love ❤️

How are you feeling today? xxx

Puppy-loveGraduate in reply to AliHC

How sweet of you to ask, AliHC. Feeling a bit battered and bruised but I got some sleep eventually. Bruised ribs hurt! I hate to think how painful broken ribs must be. A friend has taken Juno to the woods for a couple of hours so I'll have a tired dog later which is perfect. I'm being pampered so no complaints except it's a beautiful autumn day here and I'd love to go out for a run. How are you doing? Is today a run day for you? Bridget xx

Oh Bridget! I'm glad that you've got help and support on hand but I'm so sorry that you're suffering. Since starting running again I've been so much more aware of any aches and pains and niggles. Usually I'd just brush them off and get on with it. But now it's so different. One false move and I'm worried I won't be able to run. So I can understand how you must be feeling right now. All you can do is take everything slowly and carefully and be kind to your body to help it recover. Keep in mind how well you have done so far and how quickly you will get your fitness back to where you left off. Sometimes the body heals quicker than the mind. So keep your spirits high.

I'm having another rest day today and then a short run tomorrow evening after I get back from a music seminar in Manchester.

Take care and stay in touch xxx

Thanks Ali. I know that I’m lucky to have people to care for me. My son is sending lots of messages and called me last night which always warms a mother’s heart. 💗Like a good runner, once he’d assured himself that I’m fundamentally ok, he said ‘I hope it hasn’t put you off running’. It hasn’t though I guess I’ll be more cautious about what’s under my feet. Falling over is a particular skill of mine. I’ve broken bones falling on icy roads and getting out of the shower. I still shower so I can’t see why I wouldn’t get back to running.

My major problem is an inability to sit still and a fear of watching daytime tv! Thank heavens for my kindle.

While I’m on the ic, I’ll be following your meteoritic progress with awe and pride. I might even try to learn to sing. Oh no, wait. I can’t do that. All my helpers will abandon me.

Happy running, my dear. Xxx

Oh no, poor you, a lesson for us all. You had me both crying and laughing- glad you saved the trainers. Hope it's nothing too serious. Please take care and rest up. Have a very happy anniversary x

Thank you Grannytobe. Honestly, my Asics were the only thought about. Our anniversary gift to ourselves is to go to Rome in February for Italy v Scotland 6 Nations. Looking forward to it already.

That will be a fantastic trip. You can have a lovely run along the river bank while you're there.

Oh bless you, poor thing! Hubby will have to look after you today. Hopefully it's not serious 🤞🏻🤞🏻

There are so many more lovely people out there than we realise. 💕

Thank you. Hubbie is doing a great job. Well he was until he went to work. Fortunately his office is not far so he'll pop in lots through the day.

I do believe that most people are kind and want to help.

They generally are, some just are not sure how best to help. I'm glad you had the right sort at hand. 👍🏻

Thank you. As we leave childhood behind (a long way behind for me - I'm 60), falling over is such a shock. I have tea, my laptop and a good book. Could be worse.

Ouch to the power of 10, at least. So glad you are fundamentally ok & have been safely retrieved. Hope it is just soft tissue injury & you recover quickly. Happy anniversary 😊

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this! What a scary thing, but in amongst all that, a kind stranger to help take the shock away. I am keeping everything crossed that it’s just a sprain and you’ll soon recover 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Update: no broken bones but probably six weeks out as I’ve done a bit of a job on the ankle. I’ll try to be patient though I fear we may be in the big freeze here by then and I won’t be running in ice and snow. But, as Arnie said, I’ll be back. Happy running my VRBs. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Thanks Mummycav. Hubbie is being a hero. Anniversary dinner postponed until later so he had to cook for us both when he got home. That was after he walked the dog. Now he’s making tea and bringing chocolates. I can’t complain so I won’t!

So sorry to hear this, especially on your anniversary too.Im on the IC with a fractured shoulder, having to have my Runderwear running bra cut off 😳

Puppy-love profile image
Puppy-loveGraduate in reply to Getfitok

Oh no. Did you fall on a run? That’s dreadful and must be so painful.

You’ll have to treat yourself to new Runderwear when you’re ready to get out there again. I hope your recovery is smooth.

Getfitok profile image
GetfitokGraduate

Thank you, I will. I wasn’t running, I was playing badminton, I’m 6 weeks in now &it’s still painful. Ironically the 2 times I’ve visited A&E have both been whilst exercising (the other time I was running) but hey ho these things are sent to try us.
