Is it sciatica?!

Hi everyone! This is my first post, so far was silently following the programme until graduation...lost a bit of mojo after but trying to make my running more regular again....and that’s where my little, very painful problem made itself known...I could always find sound advice and encouragement from this community so hoping for some ideas ☺️

Had a bit of a back ache for about a week but decided to ignore it, as you do, and carry on gymming 🤦🏼‍♀️ Thought a nice, easy Sunday morning run would do me good too....well how wrong was I?!? Run about 3k when unbelievable pain hit me to the point I could not even walk back home...all down my right back, side and down to my leg....let me tell you, I could burst out crying....

It’s better now, after a week, done some stretches, painkillers and my house smells of deep heat 😂 but I’m scared to try to run in case it comes back...and comes back with a vengeance 🙈

Do you, lovely lovely people, have any advice? I don’t want to live in fear or running....done it for years before I started C25K 😅🙈

I would get it checked by a doc just to make sure it's nothing serious.

If you are at the gym why not go on the treadmill and see how it feels, start slow and ease the speed up.

It's awful when things like this happen, but why do we all try to push through the pain only to make it worse 🙄😏

I hope you feel better soon.

We do and it usually backfires 😅

If you can afford it, I would really recommend consulting a physio, they really are the experts with all things mechanical. My husband has been poleaxed with sciatica and the physio has been a godsend.

If you have a weakness in your back, a good physio will give you exercises and then you will have nothing to fear!

Oldschool01’s advice seems very sound. I’d also say, see a good sports physio, they’ll assess and arm you with tools and strategies to avoid the problem from recurring! Hope you’re back to normal soon!

Hi, Can only go by my own experience, but ice-packs rather than heat help with the inflammation. Then building up tiny runs on a treadmill for extra support until you are confident again... Good luck!

So sorry to hear that & pleased it’s better.

My mantra has always been “when in doubt, check it out!” So I would try a gentle run and any hint of it coming back, see a doctor!

I would recommend a McTimoney Chiropractor, your pelvis might be slightly out. I regularly get a mot. They check your skeleton out and the muscles hang on that! I am a masseur, and would always recommend a chiropractor for someone presenting those symptoms. Good luck.

Maybe a visit to the doctor first just to get checked out. Then if that's ok just go out for a slow short run shorter than your last one and build it up from there. Good luck 😊
