Advice - running top when it rains

Hello everyone, the UK weather has taken a turn for the worse this June and the rain is relentless! Having graduated only last week I am determined to consolidate and get my 3 runs a weeks fix!

Trouble is, I don’t know how to dress for the rain. I wear a fleece and light rain jacket (the pac a Mac types) and I then feel hot during the run! If I wear my sleeveless running top with a sleeveless gillet, I feel cold when I start my run.

Would appreciate any advice on this so I can enjoy running in the rain comfortably.

I usually watch the forecast and run out quick when there’s a gap with no rain 🤣🙌 usually wear normal running top with lightweight running jacket over and end up taking it off and tying it round my middle. 🏃‍♀️

That’s a great idea suebuzz, I’m exactly the same I try to dash out when there is a gap in the rain! Now I am on consolidation runs I am bound to get caught out being outside for 40’mins or so! Xx

I wear as little as possible this time of year. A good running top and shorts and I’m good to go. The tops dry quickly when it stops raining and don’t get heavy when it’s chucking it down. You could try a lightweight running jacket, but I overheat in even the lightest ones. This time of year I just go out and get wet, and I soon dry off... in the middle of the summer I run as much as possible in the rain, and in the winter I avoid rain where I can. I do plan my runs to get me back to the house/car so that I don’t get cold after the run.

UNM there’s some great advice in there. I am always feeling the cold so I layer up, but when I’m hot I get ever so bothered! X

You’re always going to get warmer as you run so I think you just have to put up with being cold initially as that doesn’t last long. If it’s raining hard a thin water resistant jacket can always be removed if you get too hot.

I have a thin waterproof running jacket over a short sleeved shirt but still get too warm so tie it round my waist and get wet! Maybe swop the fleece for a longer sleeved thin top and a more technical, breathable waterproof?

Yes that’s what I was thinking, a long sleeve thin top which is a proper running top.

I went out this morning dressed like it was winter! I bough a waterproof running jacket. I wear a long sleeve running top under the jacket. I also wore a woolly hat as I don’t like getting my hair wet! Must admit I was really hot but I prefer that than being cold!

Haha, a bit like me x The cold really bothers me x

Go layers that you can take off as you run and tie round your waist. Perhaps just a long sleeved running top over your sleeveless top would be enough. I'm just running in a short sleeved top at the moment but long leggings.

Thank you everyone!

I went to Gap this lunchtime and think I have found what I was looking for, in their GapFit range they have a thin long sleeve top with the holes for the thumbs so they cover part of your hand and they also have a hood, it’s just the right thickness to give me that extra layer and I can take it off if it gets too much.

I will Try it out tomorrow at park run, thank you all for valuable advice.

That sounds perfect and you can tie it round your waste and not have to worry about carrying it!

On my "absolutely torrential " run the other day I had a short sleeved running tee shirt with a lightweight long sleeved running jacket on top.

I was warm enough but saturated, but I didn't feel uncomfortable ( apart from squelchy feet!)🌧💧
