Extending time/distance Run 1

Decided after the success of my last run that I’m ready to start extending but kept today’s at 30 minutes as it was warm n I had a bad night the night before last n I’m feeling it today. My daughter (she’s 15 n goes on regular walks) came with me to see how she got on, she doesn’t run but has done a few 5k organised runs n wanted to see how she got on

She took off n disappeared into the distance while I slow jogged along. Ten minutes in I spotted her sitting on the bench that’s just before my halfway point. She ran another 5 minutes n then had to stop n walk the rest, having only managed about 5 minutes initially. She now has a full and complete appreciation of the benefits of going slow rather than at her natural pace n was a teeny bit embarrassed that she couldn’t keep going as long as I can 😂😂. She’s now decided she’s going to download the app n start from the beginning

Meanwhile I struggled with my pace a bit today, it took a good 10 minutes for me to settle into a comfortable rhythm, and the last 5 minutes were harder than usual, but I got it done n that’s what counts. Looking forward to to the coming cooler weather now 😊

Great job... and well done beating the daughter for endurance. Of course we all know the kids will pass us at some point, but we can enjoy these moments, and remind them of them from time to time. Absolutely wonderful to hear that your daughter is now going to take on this plan... with some commitment and effort she could be running her pace over 5k in the not too distant future.

Happy running and enjoy extending a little.

Thanks UNM, it was definitely a nice feeling knowing I did better than she did lol. Not sure if she’ll stick with it but it’s nice that she wants to try, I know she’s been impressed by the changes in my mood n my weight loss so my fingers are crossed 🤞

She may flirt with it on and off, teens can do that, but every time she goes out there she gets that bit stronger and fitter... it’ll come if she can get to that happy pace she will need to do it before too long, as you know.

You’re setting a wonderful example... having you close and seeing those results speaks louder than any book or TV programme.

I hope she sticks with it for the next 6 weeks at least, she has GCSEs n I know going running would help her to destress n clear her head, but I won’t pressure her to go. She definitely enjoyed it though n I’m glad she realised by herself that she needs to follow the programme so keeping my fingers crossed 🤞

It all sounds positive to me. We’ve lost a few great kids at junior parkrun to overly pushy parents... some gentle encouragement is always good, and running with them is great. Little Miss UNM can run 5k, but rarely does at parkrun... she comes and run/walks it now, but prefers to run without a crowd. One day she may see some lad she’d like to keep up with 😂

I can’t be doing with pushy parents. She did figure skating for 5 years and some of the parents were awful. I’m more of an ‘if she’s happy, I’m happy’ kind of parent, it seems to have worked ok so far 😁

Last time I was timing junior parkrun I had one parent desperate to know if he’d hit his PB... my preferred response wasn’t available as there were kids around 😂. I just said “it shouldn’t matter, but the results will be up just before lunch”. Don’t think they appreciated that. Happy kids is all we want... then we can have happy grandkids one day... allowing them to enjoy sport is great, pushing them to have to win is not. I’m against the lack of competitive sport in schools, that’s taking it too far... but my kid being happy that she does her best when she competes is better than a win.

Absolutely! Couldn’t agree more, it’s much more likely to put the kids off if the parents are pushing them. Surely it’s better if they want to do it for themselves

Experience is valued for a reason. Haha. Well, congrats on winning the race and setting an example for your daughter to join C25K. Everyone should run!!

Well done Jill...good to show the kids we still have it! My boys refuse to run with ne for fear of being left in my dust!

Thanks, she said she had a new appreciation for me being able to run for 30 minutes nonstop. Are you a speedy runner then?

So she should....its,a great achievement. Not particularly speedy...steady...but I will try to be speedy if I do convince them to come with me...even if it kills me.

Speedy would definitely kill me lol, I’m queen of the 20 minute mile 😂😂 Good luck convincing the kids!
