I’m new here and I’m worried about starting my couch to 5k journey, what if I can’t do it or people laugh at me?

You can do it and people won’t laugh at you.

Qualification 1: can you walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes without stopping? If so you are ready to start: if not, build up your walking ability first.

Qualification 2: it can’t be guaranteed that you won’t encounter a first-order idiot. However, most people are decent. Especially runners. In general most runners will support and encourage you (they were all beginners once) and most non- runners frankly won’t even notice you.

I admit when I started I drove a few miles along the coast, partly to get a better spot for running but partly to reduce the chance of meeting anyone I knew. I promise you by week 3 you won’t care any more and you’ll just run :)

I know how you feel. I felt just the same! But go for it. Take it at your own pace. Trust the programme because it really does work!

You must have a reason for starting the journey (mine was to get fitter, I guess that's the same for most people). Focus on your motive, the podcasts will encourage you and so will the progress you make. If you find a week very hard, take a bit longer on it. If you stick with it I'm sure you will achieve your goal. I never thought I would become a runner, but C25k worked for me. Good luck.

Ah no!!! No need to worry at all. I am on W3 R1 tomorrow. What helped me was the FAQ blog post which the admins share with you when you join. Have you read it yet? It’s brilliant and talks about the things you are nervous about. Take it one run at a time and you will not regret this journey xx

You’re going to find out so many things when you start the run......

1. People won’t laugh 2. You won’t care anyway 3. You’ll be fitter 4. You’ll meet lots of people on here who will support you 5. You’re going to be so chuffed with yourself ... and lots more things . What are you waiting for ? 😄

I've met many people in lifetime but I have NEVER met anyone who laughs at someone running. The most common reaction is awe and respect. Go for it.

When I started running I thought same. My first fear was 'my wife will laugh' so I told her I am going gym (where I never went), I started walking/running early morning in winter's around 6 am, so by the time my wife and kid wake up I was back home, slowly after 2-3 week I had no such feeling that people will laugh.

Now after approximately 4 month, I graduated to 10k, lost 15kg weight, hai gained much better fitness, stop taking blood pressure medication (I was taking since 2011).

Instead of laughing people/office colleague now respect me, compliment me about my running/fitness.

So don't fear things will be normal and you will enjoy and feel better.

Good for you - sounds like you really took your courage and went for it. Hope your wife is really supportive and proud of you for taking such good care of your health.

Yes she is supportive, only problem is she have increased my meal portion size, saying your very thin now 😋.

Her female friends now giving me compliment about my weight loss and running/fitness. May be she is bit jealous because of this.. haha..

Dont be nervous, i started this journey 2 weeks ago ( im on week 3 on monday). And i felt the same as you.

Begin the journey with us on here, im still a newbie but feel like im part of something good , Everyone on here that have answered my posts are so positive and offer great advice.

Yeah im new to this and new to on here but i will help support you through your journey.

I look forward to reading how you get on. Dont worry about what people think, your doing this for you and nobody else.

Hey love, People won’t laugh at you and even if they do who cares. Your doing something to improve your health and that’s all that matters. I’ve just completed my first week and I loved it. Be proud of your beginning. I’m on week 5 but it’s taken 12 weeks to get here. Wear something comfortable and really take your time. Slow is good😀 you can do it. I haven’t had anyone laugh. All I’ve had are positive reactions and I go a serious shade of beetroot!

I think lots of runners felt like that at the outset. I didn't tell my family for ages. Nor did I have 'proper' running gear at the outset but I followed the course (I did week 1 a couple of times) and graduated. Am off to a Stroke association sponsored run this morning and I'm proud of myself.

Running will give you confidence so go for it x

Thank you. It was a lovely sunny - and calm- day running alongside the sea near Worthing. And I was on cloud nine all day. My daughter in law also ran so a delightful day.

I thought the very same thing. But the shame I was feeling at my own fitness and health was starting to overtake the fear of what others think about you. I found the minutes I started this process, I got in a ‘zone’. It about doing whats best for you - not anyone else - and stuff em if they laugh.

But I promise - no one will laugh. INFACT, they are probably thinking ‘blimey, well done, good effort, wish I could do that / I should start doing that’. ❤️❤️

The only thing I’ll say is ‘if I can do it anyone can!’ I didn’t even own trainers before starting. Gets you headphones on, play some good music and choose your songs well to motivate you. I dont enjoy the process of running much yet but love the sense of achievement afterwards !!🏃🏻‍♀️

I begin my Couch to 5K this morning and quite honestly I'm looking forward to getting the first run over and done with as I think that'll be the hardest, not the physical exertion, just the mind games.

I had the same worries. I'm now starting again for the third time. The only think that stops me from doing it is me and my self motivation. The weekly runs are manageable tho not always easy. The sense of achievement can be massive. The feeling of wellbeing is fantastic. So why did I stop?? I let myself go to the bottom of the priority list. This time I'm going to be a bit more selfish. Go on give it a go ...you might enjoy it. And for me ...no more excuses

Hi Audrey, I started last Saturday & am not fit at all. I just about managed it all though was completely worn out by the end, but felt so good having done it. Next planned run didn't happen but did it Friday & had planned to do this morning but I ache too much. Am going to start week 1 again on Monday, then Wednesday then Saturday all being well. I'm sure you will be fine & no one will laugh at you I'm sure & you will be concentrating on what you're doing so much you won't notice them anyway. Good luck & well done for starting👍🚶‍♀️👍🏃‍♀️👍

You are not alone in your worries, as a newbie it is perfectly natural to feel this way. Just remember what has driven you to start C25K. This is your journey and you do it your way, in your own time and at your own speed. Go slowly. If you repeat runs, it’s fine.

Read all the replies to your post from people who have had similar fears but gone to achieve great things. There’s lots of encouragement, support and advice to be found here.

I’m also a newbie (at 49) and now at the end of week 2, heading out for my last run of the week this morning. Starting C25K is one of the best decisions I’ve made and I’m already reaping the benefits, both physical and mental. It really is worth giving it a go. You won’t regret it. Good luck 😉!

Each time I go out for a run I am totally focussed on reaching my goal for that day - If you go out with that same objective, it takes care of worrying whether people will laugh, it won't cross your mind and, you WILL achieve your objective. Take it slow, follow the programme, it won't always be easy but you can do it.

Morning lovely hope you are well. I am now in week 6 and so far all people have done is smile at me and some even offered words of encouragement. The most important thing to remember is that you are doing this for you. There have been a few times when I couldn’t manage to complete the run so all I did was repeat it a few days later. Every time you go out it will get a little easier. Be brave and smile (0: x

Anyone starting out has doubts that they will eventually be able to run for 30 minutes non stop. But this plan is amazing it works as if by magic. Don't worry nobody will laugh at you why would they you are making a great decision to get fit and healthy, now what's funny about that. You can do this good luck 😊😊

What anyone else thinks is their problem!

Don't let fear rob you of the chance to see what you can really do!

I'm a year graduated and just ran my third half marathon distance (13.1 miles) yesterday. If I had been asked to run for 10 mins before c25k I couldn't have done it, now I can run for over 2 hrs.

Don't let fear keep you from freedom. Get out there, breathe deeply and see what the world looks like from a runners' perspective. I promise you won't regret it. 👍😉

I felt the same but I was at a weight I was unhappy with and that frightened me more. I set my clothes out the night before, had a rough route set, set my alarm for 5am in January so it was pretty dark outside and went for it.

It's the best thing I ever done.

I'm now running 5 to 6 days a week and have even inspired a colleague at work to take up jogging.

I feel lighter, happier and have a little more confidence.

You can do this, there will be some days over the journey that you will feel anxious but you need to remember what you've achieved to date. That will get you through those day.

You can and they won’t! I was worried about being spotted in the first couple of weeks, but no-one bats an eyelid... Being out there doing it for W1R1 is the biggest challenge, I reckon. After you actually step outside and just do it, the rest doesn’t matter and it is just you and the app/podcast :)

And you will feel so much better after a few runs I bet!

I care more about comfort now than how I look (W6 now) - I even have compression leggings - still not the prettiest sight, but I don’t care anymore :D

I think the above posters have just about covered everything that I would say to you. I’m 66 carrying excess baggage and I start week 5 tomorrow morning. I went for my first run in the cover of darkness very early in the morning with a head torch strapped on tight! Now I run in the light, and the people I do see give me a wave. At the end of my run when I’m doing the cool down walk I do tell folk what I’m doing if they wonder why I’m walking after seeing me slowly running, and the reaction is always well done you!

I run very slowly, but I’m running, and even better I’m enjoying it. Come along, visit this forum daily, the advice and encouragement you will get is fantastic. As many others have said if I can do it you can too.

Don’t worry, just give it a try. I started 3 weeks ago, I can’t run. Think I’m the slowest runner ever, it’s so hard, but strangely it’s enjoyable. Last week as I ran towards another runner ( red faced and looking like I’d run 25k instead of for 1.5 mins) he high fived me. Well what a boost that gave me, it was so nice of him to offer me encouragement. Don’t worry what you look like, I’m 57, 12 stone and not exercised since I was at school, just try and enjoy. 😊

Go slow. Walk slow and run slow, repeat the "runs" ie W1R1 W1R2 multiple times if you have to. I started of in a Gym full of fit people and a few unfit ones, the fit ones were a lot of encouragement. I am 55 and was obese. I got through on the first attempt but had to restart as I had some injuries and now some 14 months later I am booked into my first run a 7k which I am nervous but confident about. I was fat and unfit, never been a sport or athletic person but I feel I have achieved so much. It is a nine week program but dont feel that is your target, if you need to take longer, overall I took about 8 months as when I came back from injury I did each run three times to build strength. Put some headphones on and use Laura, work on time not distance and remember that by doing this you are already more committed to your health and fitness than probably 90% of the country. You can do this!

I felt just like you when I started. I’m doing my graduation run on 13 April. I won’t lie: it’s been tough. But the feeling you get each time you achieve the next stage is amazing. And if you don’t manage a run, don’t give up. Just do the previous weeks run again. And keep reading the posts on here: it’s incredible how wonderfully encouraging people are. And remember, even if you progress is slow, or you are struggling a bit, you’re still miles ahead of all those people still sitting on the couch.

Would you laugh at someone? Probably not!! However slow you're going you're still lapping the ones sat on the couch with their head in a bag of doritos. I've just downloaded the app and want to start this week too after not running for 11 years (and I wasn't that great before). Well done you for going for it. You can do it! I’m doing each week twice as I have the same fear of not being able to and it’s working for me. Don’t try to run, it’s just a jog. Nobody’s laughed at me, at least not to my face, and that’s all that matters! I’ve avoided school’s out time, just to make sure 😉. Good luck - you’ll be fine, I promise xx

Hi. I'm on week 3 and due to my self confidence I run before work or really early at the weekend, I mostly see dog walkers and other runners. When I get more capable I'll run later in the day. Others tell me not to care, but I think when I finish week 6 or 7 I will feel more confident. Everyone is different and you can do it!

I seriously didn't think I would be able to do it Audrey and my kids laughed at me! But I went ahead and did every run, the structure of the plan and the support on here was great. I graduated and did my first Park Run yesterday...my kids aren't laughing anymore in fact I think they are quite proud of their old Mum!

Hi

I started a couple of months ago. Overweight and getting on a bit and my confidence at being able to run was zero. I was thankful to be able to run in the dark or very early mornings and not see anyone. I am now running for nearly 30 minutes. It is hard. I am not confident about what others think of me, but I am getting fitter and happier with myself. Make this journey about YOU and not others. You can do it. The increase each week is daunting but somehow it works. I have a park run booked early May and my aim is to keep running 2 x 5k each week.

Give it a go. The only one going to lose out if you don’t is you and you are worth more than that.

Audreyxxx. Saw your post this morning while having my coffee. You can do anything you put your mind to. I know that for a fact back in February 2009 I woke up and I couldn't see. I had gone blind in my sleep I had aready lost the sight in my left eye in 2001, but had carried on working as a joiner and driving until that day in February. I went down the hospital and they said there was nothing they can do. I had had a type of stroke on my Optic nerve and it had died. I thought game over that's it. Since then I have walked 26 miles across the Black mountains in wales. Learned to use a computer trained to become a full time massage therapist. Gaining my qualifications by traveling around the UK with my Guide Dog just us two and meeting new people and just going for it.If you can do the couch to 5k then hey at least you had a go like everyone else on this forum you had go. I don't know you but I think you will surprise yourself. And to hell with the people who might laugh. They are not worth the time of day ! Good luck best Wishes Tony .

Audrey, you’re brilliant just for deciding to do C25K. This forum is fantastic, full of support and good hints and tips - stay connected and we can all do this together. As well as all the other good advice people gave, I’d say wear some of your favourite comfy, easy casual things to run in, less embarrassing than “dressing up like a runner” when I’m still at early stage. Just leggings and comfy tee/top. I’m 58, new to running, starting week 5 and totally get your fear. Honestly though, it’s absolutely worth risking it. You’ll never regret it. Come on, let’s do it.....let us all help carry you along on the C25K wave 👍😁👏

It’s all been said before but you can do it and I don’t think anyone will laugh.

It took me about 9 months to finish the 9 week plan and after about 18 months of consolidation I’m embarking on the 10k plan.

Don’t underestimate how good you’ll feel at the end. You will feel on top of the world. Good luck, go for it!

60, overweight and needing to change my lifetime habits - Found C25K and I was worried I could do it. My wife and kids have been very supportive. I have changed the routine a bit though and it works for me. Day 1 I do C25K run but continue walking the cool down walk to reach 5K as it helps stiff muscles.

Day 2 I walk for 5K

Day 3 Rest day

Day 4 then start 3 day routine again.

Now on week 6, run 2 next and I have lost 4Kg+ after cutting out crap eating too.

My encouragement is a 70+ aged guy who I see sometimes when I am out (no idea who he is). He jogs really slowly but never stops. Everyone I pass "coming the other way" ;-) wave and say hello.

Oh, I try and time it so I listen to Radio 2 and Pop Master during my run/walk :-)

I started yesterday after years of no exercise. It was fab, the running sessions are only 60 seconds and over before I knew it. People are not going to laugh, you will be inspiring them to do the same.

The fear of being judged is often based on just that - fear. The reality is different. Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. Don't tell anyone! Put on a fleece, trousers and trainers. Earphones on, listen to the podcast and go for a walk. Jog very gently when Laura says run. Don't try to be Mo or Bolt. Watch this guy if you want an idea of to how quickly to run

I did Wk1 twice, many seem to. You will run for just a minute, several times.

You can do it! If you to a run and don't quite hit the target just repeat it, lots if us have as we go through the weeks. Just don't let yourself give up. Take it all at your own pace, however slow that might be. So what if people laugh, if anyone does it will probably be the people in cars. Ask yourself what are they doing to get fit? Good luck!

I had similar worries, but in terms of ability to do it, the programme builds you up gradually and as long as you take it week by week and make sure you take your rest days, you’ll be fine. Just remember that there’s no pressure and you can retake runs if you need to. Every time you go out running, that’s progress.

As for someone laughing, I stayed using a treadmill for ages because I was really self conscious about the idea of running out where people could see me. Now I’ve started doing it I’ve only met two types of people: those that are really nice and those that just don’t care and look straight past me like I’m a bit of the scenery! 😃

Well done on getting started. That’s really and truly the hardest part of the entire process. Everything else is just a matter of degree. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and can’t wait to see your graduation post.

Hi. I ran my first few runs after dark in fear of what people would think. When I braved the daylight no one laughed and now the people I pass in the street just smile. I especially love it when runners acknowledge me as it spurs me on and makes me feel part of the club.

I’m overweight and started to run to reduce this! It’s taken me a few weeks but i’m now At the end of week 3.

Audrey you have done the hard bit that is downloading the C25K app. From now on you are on a journey that some are still to start like yourself or further down the line like myself. You are doing this for YOU. People I find do not laugh at you at all deep down they probably admire you for what you are doing, to be honest I am in my own little bubble anyway. At the end of the first week you will feel elated believe me. Follow the advice from others and you have got this....Welcome to the C25K world of lovely fellow runners

I had the same feelings, but decided that if anyone did laugh that was their problem not mine. What I found was a brilliant group of like minded individuals whose support and friendship I would have missed out on if I had let my nerves talk me out of trying. Forget everyone else this is for you, and it will improve your fitness, confidence and self esteem. I now volunteer at my local parkrun, when I am not running and have added my name to volunteer for run director, 6 months ago I would never have considered that. Running is very rewarding, go for it.

And... what if you don’t do it and spend the rest of your life wondering what might have happened if you did? DO IT!!! I used to smoke 40 per day... no exercise and be quite happy doing that.

Now I’m on my third run though of c25k.. I’ve slipped due to broken ankle... work commitments and general laziness...

BUT

When I’m up and running.... I can attest that this forum is the most supportive that I’ve come across anywhere.... honest!!!

Please don’t give up now... you have made your mind up to do this, let us know how it goes

Everyone here started with run 1, week 1. Well, I suspect there were a few like me who downloaded the app, read it, worried about it & generally procrastinated before having a go! Take your time, choose a voice that works for you & go for it. I found it helped to make a playlist of music to run to. Good luck, look forwards to reading you have completed first run.

Hi Audrey! Now, do you laugh at people you see running along? Of course you don’t- and neither will anyone laugh at you. Anyone you meet, give them a smile and a good morning and they’ll smile back! You’ve taken the first step in deciding to do this and if you take it slowly and follow the plan, you WILL do it! Genuinely, it’s bonkers but it does seem to work so enjoy - and don’t forget to let us all know how you get on! Really believe in what people have said. No one laughs. You are out exercising. You are off that couch. Go for it. I ran up the high street on Saturday morning after I graduated.... something I never EVER imagined I’d do 9 weeks ago!! I felt proud & pleased with myself. Keep positive, YOU CAN and YOU WILL.

If they are laughing, then let them. You will have the last laugh. You are doing it for you. NO ONE ELSE. Your fitness. Your mental health, your heart. How can anyone laugh at someone who is trying. (PLUS - no one will laugh at you, because your all there for the same thing.) good look. Keep going. It is hard, but worth it.

I understand how you feel. On my first day, on the seafront (flat,too hilly near home) I started but felt too self conscious, gave up and went back to the car. The next day I returned to the seafront, but turned right, went along the cycle path. It is much quieter, but still people about walking with or without dogs and cyclists. I feel happy running there.I will miss my route when I move away very soon.

You will find somewhere where you feel comfortable to run .Good luck.

There's always a possibility but that would be their issue so don't make it yours. Remember you're doing this for You and You will reap the benefits when they're long and forgotten. As you progress your confidence will rise no end.

Hi, i just done my first run. Nobody laughed, in fact nobody even gave me a second look. I spent two weeks mustering up the courage to go for it and im so glad that i did. Im 53 and havent exercised since school. Give it a go. You will surprise yourself. I know i just have. 👍
