Well I wasn’t expecting this!! Knee saga escalates!

This past week has been nuts! After experiencing some nasty knee pain and on you lovely peoples advice I’ve attended docs, hospital and physio with the shocking diagnosis of patella femoral paint syndrome and after an uncomfortable camera experience - arthritis! I’m so gobsmacked! I’m only 42!! So my knee caps aren’t tracking correctly at all and make their merry way to the outer side of my knee joint instead of straight up and down so I have tape and exercises to try and improve it, no running until the painful swelling has reduced completely and I’ve mastered the art of not walking at a Mary Poppins 10 - 2 foot position which rolls my shin bone. The arthritis I can live with I don’t need meds or anything yet thank goodness. All in all I’m pretty bummed... I can return to running and I’m determined but I’ve gotta put right the damage first. I’m still out with my son three times a week early morning but I’m brisk walking and concentrating on foot placement, I’ve also been bike riding. I still can’t help but feel frustrated but at least I don’t feel like a loser for not ‘running through the pain barrier’. Thanks so much to all of you who advised me on here... I seriously wouldn’t have gone to get it checked out if I didn’t have this forum. Xxx

Thank goodness you had the sense to get those knees checked out ! Sounds like an excellent plan for improvement. Hope it all goes well and that you’re able to run again soon x

I honestly believed it was me being a wuss and looking for an excuse to not push on! It’s so weird realising it’s a genuine thing, the medical professionals were amazing and said running is good for my health, heart and strenthening my muscles around the knee to support them, I’ve just go to make sure I’m protecting them and doing it right. I hate not following the C25K but know I’ll rerun them when I’ve sorted out my wonky knee caps! Thanks for your support xx

You’re welcome ! I know what you mean about getting a diagnosis: it’s like being given permission to have a problem, and that’s a great relief, even though it brings new challenges. Don’t be a stranger now !

Hi - just back from the physiotherapist with a diagnosis of patella femoral pain syndrome just like you. I feel your pain, literally! Really disappointed at having to stop the program but happy that it’s a real thing, with an end in sight via exercises, though maybe 2-3 months before it’s better - eek. Hope yours gets better soon.
