W10:1 first ‘free’ run proving costly 😖

Finally, the planets aligned and I had a spare couple of hours with good weather. The sun peeked out of clear-ish skies so I donned running garb, dropped off son with his dad and drove to a brand new location - a flatly meandering sandy walk/cycle path beside a river.

My graduation run was on Tuesday afternoon and to my frustration, I haven’t been able to run since. I really needed this run. I had chosen Nike Run Club’s ‘Run with Headspace’, a 30 minute mindfulness recovery run as my accompaniment. Tranquil music and a conversation between Coach Bennett and an ex-Buddhist monk. Yes. The scene was set.

I pulled into the car park, did a lovely reverse park, pulled on the handbrake and... snap. The handbrake was now pointing at the roof of the car. Clearly the cable had snapped clean in two.

I put the car into gear, switched off the engine and considered my options. Not running wasn’t one of them.

The wind chill factor was significant. I felt cold and wanted to get going so decided to start the meditation and jog very slowly to warm up, rather than walk.

I was asked at one point to think about and relax various body parts. I gradually unclenched brain, jaw, neck, shoulders, etc, etc. I was asked to be ‘in the moment’ and managed to forget about micro-managing managers, job hunting and broken handbrakes. It was lovely. The sun was glinting on the water and the track looked inviting, not at all daunting. I saw a few other runners and we said hello and I felt quite at home.

15 minutes was called and I kept going for a couple of minutes, before turning back. It was a bit more uphill and the wind felt more of a factor. I had to work a bit harder and began to overheat. Whilst rearranging clothes, I somehow managed to lose my hat and had to do a little about turn to find it. At the same time, I somehow managed to stop the guided run but didn’t realise until several minutes later when no one came back to have a chat. I felt a little fraught at this point and my breathing was more laboured than it should have been.

I gave up on mindfulness, pressed play and carried on running, all the way back to the car, thinking about handbrakes, hill starts and the stop/start system on my car.

After a ring round of garages and establishing there is nothing to be done until Monday, and figuring out where the button was to disable the start/stop, I checked the stats, which of course are inaccurate, which is annoying given this was definitely my first 5k run run.

FitBit recognised I had been for a 45 minute run, of which no more than 5 was walked; NRC recorded 30 minutes, 4.25km at 7’03” km pace. Since I ran at least 3.1km along a linear path (and had to retrieve a hat!) before turning back, that ain’t right. Ah well. I am running again, and that is the important thing.

Have a great weekend chaps.

Great run again! One of the benefits of my low tech approach is that you don’t feel cheated when it doesn’t work and your run goes unrecorded. Fortunately the C25K app has always worked but if it didn’t I am sure I would just play it through again with my feet up at home 😄

Yes, low tech has advantages. When I climb I just climb... maybe I’ll adopt that approach with running at some point. It’s a reassurance thing at the moment, using these guided runs and keeping an eye on how far I am going, but it didn’t really help today 🤔

PS. Thank you 😊

Talking of technology I somehow managed to send the last post before I had finished. I meant to add that I hoped your next run went a little smoother! I am still hoping to graduate tomorrow, ice permitting. Recently I have abandoned music in favour of the Archers omnibus podcast - not to everyone’s taste I know but I find it easier to forget about the difficulties running when I am listening to dialogue. It would be nice to have someone like Laura that tells you the time every so often but with no other talking. Are there any apps you know of designed to do that?

The only one that I have been using is Nike Run Club. You can use the QuickStart function - just press go, basically - and opt to have distance/pace updates. So it just operates silently in the background but then interrupts the music/Archers to say, for instance, “1km, 6’30””. I am sure there are many other apps that do similar things and there will be people on this forum who are bound to have recommendations - they might not see your question buried in this thread though!

Good luck with your graduation run! I’ll look out for your post 🙂

Thanks. I will investigate that after I say goodbye to Laura ☹️.

That’s exactly what I had to do last week. It took me from week 7 all the way back to week 1 so I played the session through again!

Annoying! I wasn’t using the C25k app in this instance but the Nike Run Club app. I guess you have discovered the fact you can press start on a run and use the ⏩ button to scroll quickly through the run and mark it as complete? Saves a lot of time when the tech goes wrong!

Really 👍!!!!!!! I didn’t know that.

So frustrating for you, and sorry for the loss of your handbrake too. We are too snow bound to be able to run safely but it is now melting so I hope to be able to get out tomorrow.

Just one of those things... very annoying and the cost is likely to be one running shoe, if not two... it’s also made me wonder about going totally ‘naked’ - no tech at all!

Just seen this - hope you get the handbrake sorted! Sounds like an impressive run, even without the stats to show for it ...

Thank you! After a weekend of teeth-clenching hillstarts the car is going in tomorrow. I think the most impressive thing about the run was just getting out the car, shutting the door, walking away and managing to forget about it for at least 20 minutes!

Sounds scary! My mini has one of those delay features which means I don't need the handbrake on hillstarts - given that I live surrounded by hills it's a very useful feature!!

Ooh. I haven’t seen one of those... sounds like it would have come in handy! I had to keep repeating the mantra ‘leave it in 1st pointing down, leave it in reverse pointing up’... I think it’s that way round. Yes. And then forgetting it was in gear EVERY time I started the engine! 🙄

It gives you about a second where the brake stays on while you move your foot from brake to accelerator, definitely handy :) As for parking car in gear, I always do, habit round here! If you're pointing uphill you want it in first, downhill in reverse (basically opposite to what the car wants to do with no brake)

And cars aside, those hills must be excellent training for you!

They will be when I finally brave outside! My back has survived thus far on the lower-impact treadmill, without any noticeable pain, so I'm planning to venture outside sometime in the next few weeks to see how it copes. I'll be going for flat to start with though! Certainly the hills are good for walking, which is also building stamina ☺
