Hi all,

Ive just completed W3, R3 and I'm getting really bad shin splints. Can anyone recommend a good pair of running trainers?

Not really. My shoes may not suit you. The best thing to do is to go to your local specialist running store and ask for gait analysis... that and the answers to some questions from the assistant will present you with a set of suitable shoes... the most comfortable of those is the best shoe for you. Check their opening times and go late, your feet are slightly bigger at night.

Great job on the running, enjoy the next one.

Thank you. I'm so chuffed I've got this far. For the fact I'm still loving it, it's time to get proper trainers

Oh... almost forgot... go dressed to run and with your current shoes. You’ll be doing a minute or so on a treadmill as part of the process.

Go to a proper running shop (like RunnersNeed) and get a gait analysis. They will tell you which trainers to go for depending on how you run. I had it done but there was no pressure to buy there and then if I didn't want to. However, I did buy some new ones; they are great and feel so much better than my cheap trainers.

I had my gait analysis done yesterday. Went in my jeans n trainers n just rolled up my jeans. Got such good advice and a choice within my price range. Wore them today for my w3r3. So comfortable and really helped

Alternatively, if you have the option to run on kinder surfaces ie not on roads and pavements (which would also help your shins), you could go for trail running shoes.

I find minimalist styles work best for me and my shins (but then, running has pretty much cured the shin splints I suffered from for years before... only get twinges if I do tarmac...)

As above go to a proper sport shop, thenright shoes will make a difference. Also stay hydrated and make sure your foot falls under your body when you run and not forward. That will all be in Ian’s link.

We like photos of shoes so do share after!

I'm now a veteran of many weeks running lol, and best thing I did was get decent shoes. I was about 3 weeks in and deciding like you to buy some proper shoes. As advised go to a specialist with a machine. I ended up with a nice pair of Brookes and plenty of advice. Even the way the laces are tied can make a difference. I wouldn't advise buying off the internet but have them professionaly fitted. It's worth every penny. 😀

As everyone has said, go to a running store and get gait analysis done. I completed the couch to 5k wearing my daughter's old tennis shoes, but in week 8 was suffering with shin splints which led to further problems after I graduated. Although they did try and steer me into buying a pair costing £120, in the end I went online to sportsshoes.com and ordered the previous year's model for half the price.
