Just saw this about healthy and sustainable eating for a world with 10 billion people. Thought it made interesting reading for people eating a healthier diet.

Dunno if the likes of me would be made to eat meat! If medical science advances and we are all still around I’ll be up for swaps 😂

A bit of meat, a lot of veg - the flexitarian diet to feed 10bn bbc.co.uk/news/health-46865204

We sometimes go veggie. Basically the price of meat is getting silly.

Maybe not so bad if it saves the planet 🌍! 😸😸😸

We took the decision that our kids wouldn’t have veggie forced, or even encouraged, so I’m my “local” butchers favourite vegetarian in the world!

The price of meat here hasn’t changed much in my life, though lamb seems to have gone silly. I remember prime rump was £9/lb when I was little and last trip to the butchers I got some organic, local, beautiful looking rump for £20 a kilo. We have also invested in a sous vide bath, which really makes cheaper cuts look and smell, and apparently taste, amazing. I guess if it becomes a once a month thing prices would have to go up, but then the average meal price would drop. Little Miss UNM has veggie twice a week now, but she loves all meats so I can’t see her going full time veggie ever.

Great initiative for the world - moving forward I would love a more practical guide to the diet. e.g. if I don’t eat meat, can I substitute with fish, or only with veg?

I guess there will be lots of these ideas... but the main science isn’t new. I remember reading that if we in the UK all farmed soya we could sort out world hunger, and that was 30 years ago. My reading of the article tells me that we eat too much meat and some counties too much fish... with most of us being too dependant on the potato!

I don’t preach veggie, in fact I try to talk people out of it, and veganism if anyone says they’re thinking about it. As an animal lover I’d hate to see the aftermath if we all went vegan tomorrow! I’m a bit unusual in that I didn’t change my diet for any moral reasons, it just happened... but my reading of the article says I’d be ok to carry on as I am.

Fascinating stuff. I am surprised at the high amount of carbs in the diet, as well as bread. Someone else could have my meat allowance, and I'd be happy to have their potatoes in exchange!

In reality though I can't see this diet working for me - there's no chocolate allowance in it 🍪

Chocolate is a seed from a berry... so it’s surely under “fruit” 😂

Carbs could be an issue for a diabetic on that diet though I think.

Yes, I saw this earlier. One and a bit eggs a week... 😬 I gave up red meat a little while back but my son absolutely loves the stuff 😬 must get better at cooking with lentils...

I can eat a jar of 36 pickled eggs in a week... that may be my weakness 😂

Oooh nice. I love beetroot, halloumi and capers. And I have loads of chickpeas in the cupboard, a legacy of (revolting) homemade hummus attempts. Thank you!

I used to make hummus... not sure it was ever the same twice!
