Is there an article about what to wear in the cold, currently I only have summer gear do need to buy something quickly. I really need advice on what constitutes a base layer and what I should wear over it

Layers. Short or long sleeved running top and maybe a wind proof thin running jacket over the top. Long leggings. Thin running gloves and a buff, which can be used as hat, scarf or wrist band. Even in the coldest weather, I’m warm enough after a few minutes to remove hat and gloves and sometimes jacket, and I’m a cold body.

I tend to just use thin gloves and a neck warmer... but I never really feel the cold generally anyway.

Ooh lucky you, takes a while but once I get cold I get really cold.

Hey Angryflower, I’m the same as you, I only have summer gear too, the weather is definitely changing so I’m feeling I need to buy some longer leggings, I have no idea on base layers either... thinking I need a trip to sports direct pretty soon! 😬

Yeah it’s s tricky one-how to avoid too many bulky layers

I bought my colder weather gear from Decathlon, they do some great running clothes, good technical fabrics at very reasonable prices. They have stores all over the place:

Yes now I’ve looked, the aren’t very evenly dispersed around the country are they!

Be careful if you do give them a visit Flower, I went in for a pair of shorts and very very nearly came out with a 10 foot inflatable paddle board 😳🙄 ...love that shop 😂

Ha ha. Hmm maybe a surfboard...

That’s what I’m thinking too, I don’t want anything too bulky... or that I’m going to end up carrying, please let me know if you find any must haves! 😆❄️

TCA brand on Amazon are great value. As Flick says you need layers and a mixture - I ran early today in a long sleeve but very thin top. I was freezing to start and melting by the end.

I should’ve worn a short sleeve top and my very thin jacket, carrying it in the final third of the run.

Exactly. I froze at the start line at Blenheim Sunday, in leggings and a short sleeved running top. It was 7 degrees and misty. But ten minutes later I was easily warm enough. don't forget you have to add on 10 or 15 degrees if you're running. A lot of people in that race were wearing shorts and vests.

PS my friend lives in Woodstock, is this your nearest park run? I’ll have to check out whether she’s still doing it

in reply to AngryFlower

No, it was the Rotary Club Blenheim 10k charity race for Macmillan Cancer support. But Clairecandothis , another forum member, lives behind there and runs in the grounds - lucky person (she did she same race), so I guess it's open to the public to run as well as walk in the grounds.

That’s the thing isn’t it, cold to start then wishing you weren’t so hot. I may just buy a really good winter top for the dead of winter and maybe some sort of t-shirt thing for now (still running in a vest)

in reply to AngryFlower

If it's cold, i wear long leggings, a long sleeved running top and a thin wind proof running jacket over the top, just scarf, hat, running gloves or a muff. after ten minutes everything but the jacket comes off the top layer, and the jacket also sometimes comes off and gets tied round my waist.

in reply to AngryFlower

Omigods I can’t bekieve I said a muff! A buff!!!

AngryFlowerGraduate in reply to

Oh yeah and you’re taking everything off too. Made me chuckle! What is a buff though?

in reply to AngryFlower

A cloth tube that can be a scarf, hat, hairband, wristband

I just today picked up a decent long sleeved running top (thicker than a t-shirt but relatively thin) in Lidl of all places. Nice length sleeves with thumb holes and a slightly high zipped collar. Sadly it’s bright orange with lettering down the sleeve but for £7 I thought I’d give it a go. Aldi often have stuff in too: obviously cheap but not bad and they do decent sizes (I’m bigger and often kit isn’t built for my shape). I’m new to this so not quite ready to spend a lot yet but I definitely need some more bits.

Had the same problem so I stocked up on some bargains from sportsshoes.com last week. They have a brand called Higher State and it was all going cheap. I got a hat, a twin pack of buff like thingies (Buff, the branded ones, are really expensive) and a thin fluorescent yellow long sleeved base layer for under £20 inc postage. They do jackets and leggings as well. Worn all but hat so far and they’ve worked a treat in the chillier wind.

They do do shoes as well 😊 (end of lines so more bargains!).

Sorry if I sound like an advert but I’ve been pretty chuffed finding stuff on there 😀
