Coach to 5k to Marathon?

Hi you lovely people. I finished the C25K quite recently a few months ago. In April I applied for a position in the London Marathon, as you do. It was my 2nd time applying. I got the "you're in!" magazine this week :) So I have to do it even though I haven't run further than 5k. I have done 5 walking marathons with WalktheWalk and my fastest time was 6hrs 30mins. I don't want to walk it but I also don't think I can run the whole way. I'm scared! I'll give it my all of course and will train the way they have advised but I'm starting now. Anyone else in my position?

Wow! What mileage are you doing a week? You kinda do have time, I’ve seen six month plans from low mileage... not sure I’d fancy it though.

Congratulations on getting a place. Only today someone at work said they had been trying for 15 years and got the green light this week.

Years ago another colleague was training for LM and would get his wife to drive him X miles from home. He'd then have to run to get back ( or walk) he couldn't motivate himself to run away from home 🤣.

Very best of luck with the training 🤞💪👍

Thank you! I've found doing the c25k a determination to keep going which I never knew I had🙂

Don't be scared jma78b, the only people who don't walk at least a little bit of the LM are those elete Ethiopian or Kenyan runners you see on TV the day of the LM who run it in a time of around 2 hours 7 minutes, practically every other runner does a little 🚶 walking, plenty of time for you to train for next April s 🏃 😊LM

Thank you! That is very encouraging.

Erm, not quite. Three of my fellow motivators (and friends) run it throughout ranging 3-3.30hr non-stop. If you train properly, putting in some serious hours and you’re lucky to avoid injuries along the way, it’s doable. And that’s exactly my aim. ;)

Wow I will look forward to hearing how you got on

I am a 66 yr old grandmother of 10 and on day 2 of wk 6 after not running for 25 years and then only one charity 5 k run

I am a walker though which has helped

I am also wondering if the London marathon is a realistic aim for me in 2020

Would love to hear from anyone planning or has achieved this

I'm 55 and I only started running this year! I'm not very fast or built for speed but I'm gonna give it a damn good go🏃🏿‍♀️💪🏾

The next 6 months will be interesting and we are here to help support you. Clearly there is lots of advice on the Internet, friends and from others runners.

A quick survey of the materials available suggests for beginners (mainly runners world for the below)

1. Build your mileage slowly (using the 10% rule). This guards against injury.

2. Run easy - 80% of runs slower than goal pace

3. Run long at least once per week

and of course a justgiving page!

Thank you. That is very useful! I'm going to run for Alzheimer's which is what my dad suffered with.

You can certainly do it! 😆🏅💪🇬🇧

What an amazing experience you’ll have! I’d give the training all you’ve got, & on the day just enjoy it! 🙌
