After recovery from rhabdomyolysis

Hi there! I was unable to walk for one week during a bout of exertional rhabdomyolysis from too much cycling.

Has anyone else suffered from this?

I now know I have increased susceptibility to rhabdo due to an underlying condition of malignant hyperthermia.

A doctor advised I should do more aerobic exercise such as jogging to reduce the risk of rhabdo. So on that suggestion I am taking the C2 5K challenge.

I've done Week 1 Run 1 with Run 2 to do tomorrow and my plan is to repeat Week 1 before following the the full C2 5k programme and then joining my local Park Run.

Fingers crossed!

That sounds horrible, that unpronounceable word really sounds nasty, I hope you recover quickly from it so that you can get back to running and a little cycling.

You are right. It is horrible!

The myo bit of the word refers to muscle (fibre) and the lysis at the end means breakdown. Basically it feels like your affected muscles are burning. I could stretch them like you do for cramps but they continue to spasm.

I slept in a kneeling type of foetal position, but only got short cat naps.

Luckily I escaped the added complication of kidney failure that can happen as your body tries to deal with the tattered remains of muscle fibres!

I can only imagine what that would be like and I don't dwell on it.

I'll just keep to the c25k programme. No shortcuts!
