Week 9 Run 3: I did it (and more!)

So the last run came tonight. I very nearly didn’t go because of the crazy heat (we hit 31c here in Amsterdam today!) but I waited until later in the evening (still 25c) and made sure to take on lots of water before finally heading out at 10pm. I decided early on that because of the heat I was going to take a nice slow pace and so off I set for my final 5km plod of the couch to 5k program.

It went really, really well. This new slower pace suited me. Breathing was easy, the rhythm felt consistent and pains and stitches were non existent. I didn’t quite hit the 5k in 30 minutes so I kept going until the 5k mark and then I had an idea... I wonder if I can make it to 6k? So I kept running... and running... and running... then before I knew it my watch was buzzing to tell me I had just hit 8km!!!

8km was my dream... I wanted to be able to run 8km in time for the race I’ve booked a place on in October but here I am running 8km by the end of 9 weeks!

Thanks to everyone for all of your support over these last few weeks! And good luck to everyone just starting out in your own c25k journeys! Keep with it, it’s totally worth it!

8k!! Wow, what an epic graduation run!! Well done, that’s fantastic! Congratulations on finishing the programme :) Running in Amsterdam, gosh, that sounds lovely, all those nice bridges and also totally flat!

It is lovely, although I live in the south so I don’t really go near many bridges (I do run along the Amstel though which is great for cooler air!). Going back to the U.K. for a week next week so I’ll be running somewhere new for a while... with hills!!! 😱

I really liked Amsterdam when I visited, such a pretty city! Running anywhere cool is a good idea in this heat, it is also awfully hot in the UK at the moment, I went out today at 7pm and that was better - 6pm was far too hot for me a few days ago. Try and find a flat route on your holiday, they do exist - I live in a really mountainous region and I have a route as flat as a pancake 😄

My home town is in a valley. Literally every road goes up or down a hill!

Well done. I'm also in the Netherlands (Den Haag) and it was boiling yesterday. My preferred time is 6am so I can run along the cycle tracks without getting run over by cyclists and I don't need to concentrate on paving stones which are really bad where I live. I'm planning to do my W9 R2 on Saturday which is supposed to be cooler. Good luck with your next runs.

I did a 5am run earlier this week as an experiment (I found myself to be a little unmotivated and didn't really enjoy it as much). It was nice and cool though and I really enjoyed watching the sun come up!
