Scoliosis?

At 50 I started to suffer with back pain and it was diagnosed as being caused by scoliosis. Thai coincided with me stopping running for other reasons. At 55 I’ve now started th C25K programme (w1r3) my back pain seems no worse and I feel a lot better about myself ! Has anybody else got experience of running with this condition ?

Thanks😀

Hi Makka. I am also 55 and have scoliosis. I suffer from back and left side hip pain but I am no worse for running. I always end up in pain anyway at some point in the day. The severity of pain just varies. I have managed my pain for around the last 15 years or so, and I am the same as you in that I feel better about myself for running. On week 8 run 3 tomorrow morning! Neverthought I would do it but I have!

Well done for joining! 😁

I’m running with an undiagnosed chronic pain disorder (family history of ankylosing spondylitis and not much question that this will be my diagnosis eventually). I find my sacroiliac joints have improved but knees have worsened. As I live with pain anyway I’m thinking I can do this. Maybe I just get to choose which pain.

Good luck!

Thanks and good luck to you ! I have a knee problem too in that I had a tibial plateau fracture 18 months ago so my knee and lower leg is full of screws and a plate 😂 it is what is motivating me as I have managed to stop walking with a limp and now want to jog without a limp. I like you attitude to the pain

I have scoliosis. Obviously it varies in its severity between different people. It does not affect my running. I do and have been going to the gym for 28 years and I work hard to strengthen my back. I have a strong 'can do' attitude to most aspects of my life. Maybe I'm just lucky (?).

Just because it does not affect me does not mean that it will not affect you. We are all different.

Good luck.

I have erbs palsy and a double scoliosis. I used to suffer permanently from neck/upper back pain AND lower back/hip pain. Anyways, i started pushing through this programme and until maybe week 4 or 5 the lower back pain was an issue. I havent really thought that much about it, simply because its my “normal” ... til yesterday, funnily enough, when it suddenly dawned on me that my back/neck/shoulders have been pretty much pain-free recently 😱👍🏻! Maybe its the running( im just about to start on week 8). Maybe its the weight-loss. Maybe its a combination. Who knows? But i’ll take it 😁

Good luck 👊🏻

I also have Scoliosis of which I had corrective surgery 30 years ago. I’m only week 5 and I’ve had no issues with running. I do wonder if my unsymmetrical body may cause issues further down the line, but I’m going to stick at it.

I just listen to my body, after my first run my hips ached, and so I make sure I do at least 10mins of stretching afterwards and they haven’t hurt since then.

I think it’s also helpful to do other exercises alongside running, such as strengthening and maybe yoga. Having a strong core to help support the back can do nothing but help!

Good luck with your running journey.
